Popeyes is currently building a place in La Vega next to Burger King (across from Expreso Vegano buses).

It should be interesting to see how it does. La Vega is an interesting market. It has a complete Burger King, but not a complete McDonald’s. Pollos Victorina isn’t there, yet eating chicken occurs almost on a daily basis among the locals. One of the most consumed Dominican salamis (INDUVECA) is originally from La Vega. One of the largest Dominican radio stations conglomerate is also originally from La Vega (Grupo Medrano). Even when it comes to religious traditions. La Vega is the only one in the whole country that celebrates 2 virgin: Nuestra Señora de la Concepción and, what essentially is one of the oldest devotions to the virgin Mary in the Americas, Nuestra Señora de La Antigua (also Lantigua). The first painting of that virgin was brought from Spain by Christopher Columbus himself.

Anyway, I wonder if Popeyes will offer delivery in the town only or also surrounding areas. Unlike in much of the DR where the countryside population quickly dissipates as you leave each town, the countryside surrounding La Vega is actually crowded with many areas acting more as a suburb than a true “campo” with people that all they do is live in the “campo,” but their lifestyles is more similar to town dwellers.

They are building a KFC next to the Texaco at the entrance to Jarabacoa also.

Santiago will not stay far behind. While not yet definitive, there are talks about Popeyes might open at Santiago Center, the new mall being built there.

That mall is going to have some nice stores, nothing like Colinas Mall. lol Even Massimo Dutti is opening a store there. The Colombian Café Juan Valdez is also definitely opening a place there. The first Café Juan Valdez in Santiago?

I suspect we are at the beginning of a new wave of fast-food restaurants. Many of these chains require their owner/franchisee to open new branches on a regular basis.

Most of these owners are not struggling entrepreneurs, but folks with deep, deep pockets. Money isn't a problem.

I'm sure all of these folks are shopping for new locations to acquire on a daily basis because real estate prices are continuing to climb.

Take San Cristobal, for example. SC is growing like crazy, but there is only one U.S. chain here: Little Ceasars. How long do you think that will last?
