OK, just for chits and giggles, what do you think Sosua will be like in 10 years? Put some thought into it, pls.

Hopefully Pedro Clisante beach end closed to traffic again.
Still chicas patrolling.
May be some similar action at the other end of the street where it was supposed to go.
Old beach shacks closed and the beach now much quieter with the new plazas proving too distant from the centre.
No major infrastructure improvements with holes and bumpy roads.
Electricity supply unreliable.
Major traffic problems on the main road.

Just met with my realtor on Friday to discuss this very topic. I'm 3 years in to Sosua, so there's a ton of naive optimism here...

IF the Playa Sosua plazas step up the food/bar options...
IF they can manage to move the chica activity to the other end of Pedro Clisante (or kill it altogether, but I'm not THAT naive)...
IF they can manage to lure one or two major hotels to anchor the beach, or even get a legit buyer with deep pockets to renovate whatever hotel used to be attached to Pirates Bay)....
IF Playa Bergantin takes off and brings manages to bring some infrastructure improvements to the North Coast (starting with some aspalt...jfc these roads)....
and IF the open skies agreement does what it's supposed to do once ratified here....

I'd like to think that if those things could happen, Sosua might be able to attract enough tourism dollars to address some of its biggest drawbacks (traffic, lousy roads, trash, among others). This place has a ton of potential to grow, not that I want to it to become Punta Cana North, but there's some room to grow without losing its personality.

Do I think this will actually happen? Probably not....and I'm not going anywhere if it doesn't....but wouldn't hate to see it.

Once an area loses its tourism, where in the world has that recoverd? Could Sosua be the first place that happens?

The plazas might be done by then at each beach end and if they are all of the beach shacks will finally be gone.

More expats will live in the area.

Anything else is just wishful thinking.

World around us can and will change fast the next 10 years.
The number of tourist that can afford to travel and the purchsing power of their money declines.

Prices will continue to rise.
Europes economies are collapsing (Germany, France).
Unemployment is rising. We are sliding into a great depression and hyperinflation.
Both USD and EUR loose their value.
And then artificial intelligence, autonomous cars, robots are killing more and more jobs.
All this will hit the tourist industry.
The USA probably will recover, but might take a long time, Europe probably not.

In 10 years, probably most people with money to spend will be in China and BRICS.
Question is if the DR will get the attention of the potential tourist in China, Asia in general and Russia.

In 10 years Sosua will be a quite area.
Many foreigners will have sold or want to sell their properties because they need cash.
Most people including residents will not have money to spent in tourist locations.
Sosua beach renovation will not be finished.

The beach will have condos being built on it but not finished. The beach will not really be enjoyable as the plazas are too far away. The plazas will sell trinkets, overpriced drinks and bad food. Most units will be empty and run down, some never finished. The town, businesses will come and go just like they always have. Electric will still be an issue as will water. Prices will get too high for most tourists and expats. The Hard Rock Cafe will have an opening date.

The traffic in Sosua will be mind numbing. The government might build the Cabarete bypass to relieve the hours long traffic jams there.

I will refrain from injecting sarcasm. I believe it will remain the same as it has the last 20 years. plus, or minus a few cosmetic shifts.

I'm going to bet in 10 years Sosua will be twice the size it is now, most of the growth being 4-5 floors apartments. Many more restaurants, girl trade will be mostly online.

The last point is correct. It's the way to go. They will have a Burger King.

10 years is a long time, mi amigo!
Regarding electricity supply and water. In the 21 years I have lived in Cabarete the water supply has gotten much worse and the electricity is out mainly when Edenorte does so called maintenance or if the trees in our development are not cut back from the power lines and it rains. So electricity is actually better despite the greater awareness of when there are problems through social media.

Sosua is not the same now as at was when I moved, so I do expect moderate changes based upon many more expats and government initiatives.
Many more condos and villas in the region and lots of land on which to build more.
I certainly don't expect expats to sell and move elsewhere. Where would they go that is cheaper? Haiti or Africa?

The limitation to growth will be water supply They can always build more oil or coal fired power plants.

Both will go nowhere fast. HR for overcharged pricing and BK for the worst hamburgers you can find...................
BK burgers are bad because they're pre-cooked and stored in a plastic tray in a warmer. Ask them to make you a fresh one right off of the broiler and see the difference.

There has been a Burger King in Puerto Plata for years. I did try the McDonalds in Jumbo parking lot in Puerto Plata once and never again- even worse than in the USA> I have not tried Wendys in Puerto Plata, but the Burger King was superior to McDonalds.
