Here's some information that some would find interesting. It is from a link provided by Major448 entitled "Sex Tourism as Economic Aid"-

Ms Sanchez Taylor and Ms O'Connell Davidson suggest that the reason many female tourists are able to delude themselves into believing they are not prostitute users lies in their racialised power over the men: "Racist ideas about black men being hypersexual and unable to control their sexuality enable them to explain to themselves why such young and desirable men would be eager for sex with older and/or overweight women, without having to think that their partners are interested in them only for economic reasons."

This explanation doesn't fit the usual profile, does it? :ermm::ermm::ermm:

has anyone ever thought to do a survey with these workers to find out what they think of this topic?

instead of us sayin..."this the the right way"...
maybe we should ask them what they think and want

There was a book written a few years ago that delved into this subject. It's called "What's love got to do with it? Transnational Desires and Sex tourism in the Dominican Republic" by Eileen Brennan.

Brennan spent the good part of 10 years traveling back and forth to Sosua and witnessed the changing face of the sex trade there. But her study ended during a very pivotal year, so even though it's a good read (though her feminist agenda does color her research) I have to say many of her conclusions have become anachronistic.

No longer is it just a matter of survival for these Dominican women. For some it is, for others it's a matter of materialistic sport. Some of these women are younger than their counterparts in Brennan's book and are not burdened with the responsibilities of supporting a child. They are just looking for a good time and some easy money with a foreigner.

Whether the clients are changing as well is not for me to say. Only a resident of Sosua can tell us what type of tourists are drawn to the town nowadays.

Exchanging this type of information will help in understanding the dynamics of what makes the place go as opposed to the tired and stereotypical visage of the bloated gringo with the wrinkled skin and his tiger-striped Speedos drooling over underaged, cracked-out desperadoes.

Argue, no, but add that most of the women coming in from those countries (as well as the U.K., of course) also fit the bill as sex tourists.

Although some people here would rather call them "romance tourists" because it's so fundamentally different than what the men do. :paranoid::paranoid:

Ah, Blackpool - I used to do gigs there every week for years in the late '90s.

There is nothing that Sosua has that comes even close to the scariness of a kebab shop at chucking out time.
Yee gads!!!!
The Sosua girls would not last 5 minutes.

Both are like the Cantina Band scene from Star Wars.

The donkeys are better fed in Blackpool.

YEAH RIGHT....you and EDDY keep telling yourselves you are actually doing a good thing paying for these girls....you are actually saving them from a bad life!!!!!!What bullsh$$TTTT. Oh and let's not forget that the girls, being put onto drugs, beaten and treated like meat actually attract tourists to Sosua and the dirty old men who come to Sosua for the girls really make the town into the nicest tourist destination.
Give me a break those men are for the most part pennieless, they live in dirty cheap rooms and probably do not spend more than $20.00 a day (girls included). When will you start realizing that the prostitution is killing Sosua.

20 dollars a day incl girls????? I see many restaurants and bars filled with people drinking and eating on a daily basis, believe me they are spending more than 20 dollars in each establishment, then they stay in a hotel which runs about 30-75 per night depending where they stay. They pay a young lady for a night of passion anywhere from 500-5000 pesos depending on their negotiation skills or whatever. These girls come from all over island and stay in lower priced rooms throughout Sosua, la union, charamicos,Castillo ect... These girls take moto conchos to and from home and to various hotels to perform services. The hotels that these so called lowlifes stay in hire maids, security, admin staff who all live in area. Not to mention the beauty salons all over who cater to these women so they can look beautiful for their clients. If you take the girls from Sosua you put so many other hard working people out of work and destroy whole communities that depend on it. Save me the beatings and drug crap, Most of those girls dont use drugs and are actually good people just poor, There is no welfare in DR, remember that. they dont work they dont eat!!!

Poor, poor sanky! I was out having a cold Presidente, and I saw a poor sanky sitting with a gringa. When she looked away, he looked like wanted to be anyplace else but there. But, he had to keep up appearances. She was picking up the tab, after all.

I can only imagine how hard it is, and how they keep these poor young souls as drugged up, cash whipped, sex slaves. (Yes, I heard they beat them with money.) It must be horrible, the things they do to those poor, helpless, young men. Someone should really help them.

These old, queen sized women sit there in their $200 US per night rooms, drinking their top shelf liquor, and flash promises of a better life for these poor sankies. All to entice them into acts of depravity. And I've heard that they sometimes even make them do some of the most god-awful things. I don't even want to think about it ... it would make me shudder. The police should do something about it!!

If we just could do something about those awful gringas, and their sleazy, corrupt activities, this would be such a nice place! Wouldn't it?

Maybe we can get a movement started .... clean up the place ... make it just like back home .......... :pirate:

I kinda understand where Suzannel is coming from.

Alright, I understand that tourism didn't bring or create prostitution in the DR. It is all over the world and nothing is wrong with it.

BUT patting yourself in the back for saving these girls from destitution and boasting about how this business is contributing to the local economy is a bit much, no ??

No wonder Dominican have a such a bad view of expats if that's how you want contribute to their country's economy....

Africada tell me one thing, How do the Dominicans living in and around Sosua make a living if they took away the prostitution? Do you live there? Have you ever spent time there? You cant just make a decision like that if you dont know the area.

No, the reason some Dominicans don't like expats is because they don't understand us. Apparently we grow cash, work very little and have alot for it. We fly in and out of the country on vacation 10months of the year, screw around internationally, live like rap stars, have 16 homes, several sex slaves in different countries are best buddies with 50cent and spend every evening down the casino with the NY yankees dropping $10,000US without even thinking about it.
Screwing their women is probably something low down on the list of reasons a Dominican will hate a foreigner. Take a Dominican guys sister and allow her to live with you and you will be flavour of their lives. Sex is cheap here, not only finacially but morally, it is no big deal and I don't think alot of Brits, US or Canadian women can get their heads around this. Don't adjust to it, just accept it!!

Right on point, wish i could give you some points but gotta spread it around a little first.

Whoa. When did I ever say I pay for hookers. Plus you would be surprised the number of girls that get picked up by 70,000.00US$ Jeepetas. I'm sure the owners don't live in dirty cheap rooms. Rather in expensive villas. These guys are either single/divorced or are stuck with nagging/bitching wives and want some decent sex for a change.

Nagging/bitching wives right on Eddy!!!!

Do you really think they're not making their share of contributions through the same mechanism?

I doubt that local Men and Women engaged in hooking create any "major impact" on the overall economy of the country but in Boca Chica and Sosua it makes for tourism in the "off season" and that keeps room occupancy rates and restaraunt/ bar revenues at or above break even.

Nobody chased the Ladies of the evening from Boca Chica. They chased them underground, into houses and hotels which have been converted to that purpose and most of the customers in these places are home grown, born and raised Dominicans. That whole Duarte freak show thing is a scaled down relic of a bygone era. Most of the Girls who work in the casas live in the casas and not on the streets with the freaks (and those old guys with the galoshes and trenchcoats, LOL).

It's a new day and there's civilized ways to do things and that's where I think the "cleanup" is headed. Out of control, unregulated interactions between hustlers and their prey can lead to bad press and the loss of more tourist dollars than it generates. Getting this under control and segregated makes a mountain of good fiscal sense. Look around at the other Caribbean islands where unless you know who to ask and what to ask for you'll never see any evidence of sex tourism at all.

Cleaning up the "Dodge City" of the North Coast doesn't translate into cleaning it out. The place is simply evolving. I think it's a good thing.

I like it better now, Capitalism at its best!!!!

In Sosua I would say it is more foreigners than Dominicans, but everwhere else in the country there is no shortage of pay for love. Every carwash or bar you can pay a salida and a girl can leave with you. The only difference is the price is soooo much lower out of the tourist areas. For a poor country the Cabanas are always full.

I saw a man with a young girl at a hotel in Santiago. He noticed me looking and turned away scared that I might report him or something. I did not do anything about it, did not tell the hotel reception, maybe I should have. What does one do in such cases? I just want to do the right thing.

I think that anytime you have a such a concern, the hotel front desk is a good place to point it out. BUT, keep in mind that unless you read minds, you don't really know why he "turned away". And can you really tell how "young" she was. Who knows, maybe it was his daughter ... the front desk would know how to handle it. (Did you know that some hotels check ID's on all guests, to make sure that they are of age ...)

Beyond that, I would say that unless you actually see a crime taking place, take no action and make no comment to the guy, unless you want to become involved in altercation.

Hope it helps.

How young is young? if you don't know what to do then do nothing. If it is obviously a 12 year old kid then give the receptionist a nod, let them know you have clocked it, they will then know better than you if she is legal or not.
Chances are she is legal, men don't tend to be stupid enough to flaunt thier paedo tendancies in public. And if she is legal then don't think she is forced, talked into or obligated to do anything, quite the oposite.

This part of your statement is an observation.

I saw a man with a young girl at a hotel in Santiago.

This next part is pure conjecture.

He noticed me looking and turned away scared that I might report him or something.

I did not do anything about it, did not tell the hotel reception, maybe I should have. What does one do in such cases? I just want to do the right thing.

The right thing to do would be to mind your own business. I say this with all due respect for one reason-in a country where people freely take the law into their own hands, you may wind up with more problems than you bargained for if you meddle so blatantly in someone's affairs, regardless of what it looks like to you from the outside.

In my travels, I have seen fathers who have HAD to take their son or even daughter into a public restroom stall -- yes, even into the men's room. They really had no choice, nature called. You can usually tell what's going on, and whether it's innocent or not. (And yes, if I thought it was anything but innocent, I would become involved ... but this is in the US, not the DR)

It's good that you are observant. But, we just have to be careful about making assumptions.
