World Coffee prices have hit all time highs and projected Arabica coffee harvests are forecast lower.
Maybe DR will use less because the EDEs are turning off electricity during morning brewing time.

A half pound bag of SDC was seen at Plaza Lama in Santo Domingo at $200rd last weekend. At Nacional in PC it has increased from $138rd to $180rd overnight.

I think it's still reasonable but if it goes to $30 per bag I'm going to treat it like a good Whiskey - special occasions only.
A small 12oz bag of Starbucks is currently $9.00.

I can't live without it. It's just as important as air.

But why are SDC's prices going up if their beans come from here? Or am I missing something?
They have been importing their beans for about 10 years now since they had the big coffee rust fungus epidemic here that wiped almost all of the coffee plants.

Rumour has it that about 70% of SDC is actually Indonesian bean. This why they introduced their premium level "regional" brands. They got caught.

We only buy the 1 lbs pack as anything less does not make sense and it's amazing as I recall going to virtually any supermarket (near POP) the price being around 170-180 pesos for the 1 lbs (not half lbs) pack. Then it went to 200+ a few years ago and now at more than 300 pesos... The sad thing is, that's still not even expensive for Scandinavian prices but for DR prices yes.

Interesting to find out DR coffee is imported.

How long does it take to grow new coffee plants to make a farm productive again?

And will the "rust" not return or do they plant heartier variety like the 'robusta' coffee variety.

I certainly don't like the idea of pesticides in my morning coffee, used to fight a fungus. And I'm partial to Arabica because of the low acidity. Probably why it's the most popular variety.

I think Colombia & Brasil had an outbreak fungus a few years back that raised coffee prices a lot.

Puerto Rico coffee was nearly wiped out by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Seems there is always something pushing coffee prices higher.

I did know it was imported which kind of made me feel silly being fan of a Dominican product that is not even of Dominican origin. Perhaps it was the way they prepared the coffee in the campo that made me addicted...

What I did not know was that they are replanting the trees and as per the article actually taking measures that this would not happen again. I hope that is the case.

I think there's just always so much demand for coffee that if the less supply, the prices will go up. My wife can do a short period without coffee, I get irritated if I try the same... I could not imagine a morning without a cup or two... It's an integral part of the morning routine really...

I live in the middle of coffee country here in Colombia and almost all of the coffee plants here were replaced some years ago with a rust resistance variety, don't know about the DR.

My ama de llaves was in a tizzy about coffee yesterday. She told me "¡No hay más!" and showed me a minuscule packet she had secreted away in her handbag. She tends to be slightly excitable, yet in a strange way, she's also right about a lot of things. So I will listen to the Tatti advice. But I mean, Santo Domingo isn't the be-all and end-all. There are other brands. Being from NY, I have always had a taste for Bustelo.

1lb of SD is 366 pesos at Playero.
$6.00/lb. I get a lot of cups out of a pound so it seems OK but it's definitely more expensive.
I just feel like we are being dupped by Santo Domingo Cafe if it's imported from Malaysia.
