My husband and I have been traveling to Bavaro for the past few years. Seems like a nice community with lots of interesting people. We purchased property on our trips, made some nice friends, and as I am so close to retirement, I thought It would be a great idea to live here full time as I can be close to my mother and brothers.

. What seems strange to me is that it looked as if everyone was happyband enjoying the carlibbean life when I used to visit, but now everyone we meet is constantly complaining about life in Dominican Republic. Not just complaining but it seems that everyone has a story behind them, nwhich most of the time seems to me that it is just gossip.

I see it reflected on this board as well, people write comments and some other person jumps in with a nasty comment or some sort of insult.

I am beginning tobthink Bavaro is just not the ideal place for our retirement. If We are not with my family in Santo Domingo, we are left to dine in Bavaro with angry expats that complain all evening about how corrupt we are and what a mess this place is. Yes it may be, but why don't you just go back home to your organized country? Why live in misery?

This is a very beautiful country indeed and happy people. Just try to see one day through the eyes of an expat who comes here spending huge amounts of money to live the rest of their lives peacefully and then suddenly it becomes a nightmare. expats are like walking dollar bills, not one, mind you not one person knows how to do their job, electricians, plumbers, lawyers, politicians, doctors, suppliers... i haven't found one who is correct and doesnt try to rip you off and the work they do is so messy that you have to go find ten other men to fix one job done. This doesn't happen in other countries... That's the biggest difference why every expat complains. Because we are not used to this attitude of dominicans who do not care. But in the end, the nature, weather and the beach compensates for our woes here...Somewhere i feel that Dominicans on this island were happy bunch living of the nature, no need to work just lie down under a mango tree, wait for the mango to fall down and eat it, suddenly all the tourists come on the island, too much stress and too much work. Work isn't for dominicans. Voila, my say.

Sounds like your DREAM of opening your restaurant here is fast becoming your "NIGHTMARE"!!!!!

Working With Dominicans is NOT like "Herding Cats" no matter WHAT anyone tries to tell you!!!!

That gives Cats a bad name!!!!!

Even cats use a "Litter Box" not the side of the road to relieve themselves!!!!!

"Good Luck" with your restaurant, even though you won't need it for long!
You will soon be giving up on your "Dominican Dream"!!!!:(:(:(:(:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Why do you think 99% of DR1ers posting here, tell those coming here with a dream like yours (Beach Bar/Restaurant) to NOT DO IT????

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

ps, blaming "Tourists" for the dominican "NON-Work Ethic" is a JOKE!!!
They had 500 to do THAT all by themselves!!!!!
Pretty "GOOD" job they did!!!!!!

it seems as if you have soured on the plan to run a restaurant here. i wish you all the best, and hope you iron out the wrinkles, and proceed toward success in short order. it is not going to be easy. you are not going to be working with the most industrious and consciencious people on the planet. secondly, i hope you have dedicated a lot of time on inventory control, or you will be feeding both customers and families. trust me on that one.

Haha, well a small advantange is that i have indian origins which in a way help me cos we indians are somewhat similar in certain ways. Completely corrupt, godfearing hypocrites, also things foreigners are walking money bills.Driving in india is way worse... Only thing is working hard! I have hired dominicans and i hangout with them sometimes to understand their way of living so i can deal with it. As they say, when in rome, be a roman.
Let's see how far i can get lucky with that.

Back to the OP,
I still live in the States and I get the same thing in reverse a lot of the Jamaican and other English Caribbean islander’s bad-mouth the USA all the time.
It may be a thing english speaking people do. I never remember a Dominican doing the same, I’m sure your fine one but not like other english speakers.

Perhaps...
On the other hand, I have heard Germans, French, Italians and other non-English-speaking nationals grumble about the country's shortcomings.
Mind you, you can't expect people to jubilate about this 'paradise' all day long while not having had water or electricity for days... ;)

Chris,
Whatever makes you think my restaurant is in third floor?hehe. It's the pizzeria behind danny's building. Before it was AMA, Happy hour etc.
It's perfectly on the ground floor behind cicollela supermarket with a nice terrace, garden and a patio. CU

Oh it very much happens in other countries, including the USA. The less likely they think they are to get caught, the more likely they are to do it. The expats complain because they come in with starry eyes and the reality smacks them in the face.

I don't mean to answer for CCCCCCCCCC but I know why I was thinking third floor. Because in the other thread "Dannys is now Batu" someone eating a hamburger at Dannys said he thought the Indian restaurant was upstairs where there is/was another Italian restaurant. I have only eaten pizza there. They have a great wood-fired pizza oven. Then later someone did say, no , the Indian restaurant is on the first floor. Buena suerte.

Here on the North Coast the expats I have met all seem content and love it here, never been to Bavaro.
Der Fish

I find people in bavaro to be the same. In almost 10 years here. I have seen many come and the ones that complain the most are not here any longer. No big surprise.

My commenton this issue is that the DR can be a very difficult place to live in all year round especially if you come from a place where manners are important . It can be very grating to deal with Dominican drivers and shoppers and patrons in the cinemas , so I think a break from the DR is more than occasionally needed. For me , with horrible arthritis, I must live in a warm climate all year round and the DR is as interesting a place as I can find

Not something limited to English Speaking people. I have heard French people living in the US complaining about Americans and American stupidity. Even watching tv with friends, was a good occasion to analyze the commercials and how dumb they were. There was also a few typical loudmouth Americans we knew and didn't like.

But hey, it was not like Americans would just sit around and hear a foreigner critizice their country, even if it's constructive, contrary to what some people say. My friends were not rude people, and they all got their fair share of " why don't you go back to France?" comments.

So, while It's normal for a foreigner to complain about a country's issues and shortcomings, the OPs reaction and opinions are also fairly normal.

It's where Happy Hour used to be, behind Danny's (now Batu) in Los Corales. Which means yes, near the french bakery.
