Minister of Foreign Relations Roberto Alvarez called for an end to arms supplies to Haiti and protested the intent to include known criminals in the Haiti transition government. “The present measures are not enough,” he said, when speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on 22 January 2025 at the UN headquarters in New York City.

Roberto Alvarez stated: “The time has come for this organization to take on a more effective and direct role in the pacification of Haiti, supporting the authorities of that country.”

Alvarez corroborated statements by the UN Special Representative for Haiti Maria Isabel Salvador who gave an overview of the challenges faced by the Haitian National Police (HNP) that she says remain immense. Salvador said enhanced international assistance is critical. She said the security situation has worsened at a time when...

Alvarez and Salvador will have an insurmountable task ahead of them. Trying to get the UN to take a bigger lead and send an expanded military force into Haiti is a non starter. The UN’s focus for the next decade will be Gaza and its reconstruction. The UN is hell bent on creating another massive welfare state which will allow Hamas to rise again.

Alvarez and Salvador identified the main root causes of the violence. Illegal arms importation and corruption within the new Haitian government. Nothing will be done by the UN or any other countries to resolve these problems. Only two countries showed enough interest to throw money and limited military resources at the problem. Trump is busy resetting the American political agenda and Canada is busy selecting a new Prime Minister and getting ready for an election very soon. Trump has clearly stated there will be no US intervention in Haiti. Canadian forces are down in numbers and spread so thin, I doubt they have the capability to mount a full fledged long term intervention and there is no political will in Canada to do that anyway.

If France wasn’t so consumed with internal politics, they might have some short term interest. Other than that, no other countries are interested in assisting Haiti. None of this is good for the long term security and economy of the DR. You can’t sit next to an infected person and not expect to contract some of the disease.

Speaking to the UN? He might have been talking to himself in a bathroom. Total waste of words , time and effort.
You have made your opinion of the UN clear many, many times before, but they are the only body that can mobilise the amount of international support required to improve the situation. And, I know you will reply that there is nothing that can be done to improve Haiti, as you have said many times before, but that defeatist attitude had no hope of achieving anything.

if or when the latest intervention fails, someone, at some point, will do something to replace it. That’s a given. Whether or not another new intervention would be successful remains to be seen. For political and security reasons, Latin America and North America can’t let the Haitian violence continue indefinitely.

There is nothing that will be done. Nothing. Look at what is being done now. It amounts to NOTHING at the end of the day.

Whose security is at risk off the island of Hispaniola? ANSWER: Nowhere else. If it did matter, no intervention possible would help,

That is why nobody will do anything, because it is of no importance to them.
The DR needs to do all it can to protect itself. That is all that will be done.

My attitude, so some call it, is based upon reality.

Politics have a way of changing things unexpectedly Windy. The Haitian situation is fluid and persistent.

What will fix Haiti? What that has not already been tried and failed miserably?

There is no country politically motivated to fix Haiti outside of one. The Dominican Republic.
The DR can build border walls and deport illegals... That is all that can be done.

Haiti needs a proper intervention. A capable military force occupying it for the long term and a military administration, similar to the Marshall plan but much smaller in scale. A hard sell to Haitians and the UN but , possibly, Haiti’s only path to salvation.

Haiti has no path to salvation

And please recall Trump 1.0

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting

There is no reason Trump 2.0 , or anyone else today, would take any interest in Haiti. The UN will do nothing....
