Funny how things go.
What starts out as a thread hoping to banish Apollo off the map, turns into a bunch of good free publicity for them.
Even if this one driver was actually guilty of the allegations, I think I would still use the service, considering the rave reviews it's getting here.

Apolo are the most reliable, have the most cabs and therefore the best coverage, but ideally you should find a driver you trust and ask for his unit number (numero de unidad) when you call the Apolo central switchboard, or get his cellphone number and call him directly.
The 809 537 0000 number is correct, BTW.

My bad.
It must be Apolo, or it would sound like your saying "apoyo".
i guess the 809-686-1212 is old or at least incorrect now.

809-6861212 is the number for AeroTaxi, I like to use them.

I also use Rueda Taxi 809-239-9000 and Taxi Express 809-537-7777 as they are cheaper on multiple-stop trips. For example, a trip I thought would cost about 400 pesos (3 stops in various directions including destination, plus some waiting time) the cost was only 300 pesos.

Now I have the right number, let's talk about cost.

I usually pay between 100-150 pesos to go anywhere in the city central area. At night the cost is between 150-200 pesos. Is this the correct amount. I won't argue over an extra 50 pesos.

I needed a cab from Caribe Tours to Boca Chica one time. The driver told me 1500 pesos. I walked away laughing. He chased after me and asked what I would pay. I said 800 pesos, thinking he would counter offer. He just took my bag and we started walking to the cab.

On more than a few occasions, people use tthe "I was Robbed" story to try and cover up what really happened to the money!
Say the lost it in a casino, gave it to their lover, bought drugs "Whatever"!
I have heard too many "stories" of people being "robbed" ONLY when they happened to be holding thousands of pesos! Thieves in the DR must be VERY lucky! They alway pick the person carrying thousands!
I believe VERY Little of what I actually "SEE" in the DR,and NONE of what I am told!

I won't address your issues with CC, but I will say that I know of people who have faked being robbed, in order to keep the money themselves.

Calm down, you are new to the board. After some time you will get used to CC and after some more time you may even get to like his posts!

CC knows what he is talking about.

Your mastery of English is awesome.
By the way 'cuz' is not an English word.

I haven't paid much attention to the name of the cab company when I get in a hack, so I can't comment on which company has provided me the best service. I do what a previous poster mentioned, get a card from the driver if I like him and his wheels, and call him the next time I need a lift. Once I've got three or four cards, I'm all set.

Now that I've addressed the main topic of the thread, I'd like to ask a question on a related topic.

I've had trouble sometimes getting a cab to come to Guaracano de Villa Mella. I admit the streets are pretty bad in Villa Mella, but there are really serious potholes all over the city. I'm just an occasional visitor to the DR who likes to be off the beaten track, (haven't been in an AI yet), and would like to hear a few opinions from people with more experience in the Santo Domingo area, as to whether it's the condition of the roads or that area's reputation that causes many cab drivers to not seem to want to go there?

How about carros publico in SD? (It is basically like sharing a Taxi with a few people..)

Are those common in SD and how reliable are they? Are they worth it for the lower cost??

They were pretty good in POP...but then again...so were motoconchos..and those are also unsafe in SD....

I've used Apolo exclusively with no trouble and sent friends and loved ones with them........never a problem.

My GF uses a publico to go to and from work.....I believe it's the same group in the same car daily....although I've heard this is not the best way for a tourist to travel.

I have a personal driver when I am in country.

I'm not really a tourist per say...

I will be living in SD...and I have lived in the DR before...

The "personal driver" you have...is it just when you visit for a few weeks at a time?

Is it just a friend of yours? Or someone you hire each time you are there? How much do you pay them? (if you don't mind my asking)
