Most Dominicans think celebrating Thanksgiving is an exclusively American thing to do. Now, it seems there is a Dominican law that provides for the get-togethers.

Over the weekend, Supreme Court of Justice former president Jorge Subero Isa posted on X that back in 1962, the transitional Dominican government council had enacted under President Rafael Bonelly had enacted Law 6038, giving official status to the celebration of Thanksgiving Day in the Dominican Republic on the same fourth Thursday of November. Noticias SIN shared the news with its readers.

The 1962 law designates the National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayers and sets it aside for reflection and gratitude. The law instructs the secretariats of Education and Interior & Police to oversee compliance with the law.

It might be an official day here but try and find a restaurant that can cook a real Thanksgiving Day Turkey meal with all the trimmings. Once Rocky's retired I have not seen one that can come close.......

In Cabarete and Sosua where there are a lot of expats you'll find restaurants with a Thanksgiving Day dinner and the supermarkets have all the TD ingredients, but I've never heard Dominicans elsewhere talking about it or celebrating it but, hey, Dominicans are always up for another holiday!

Never even heard of them before(?). None of the restaurant dinners I've tried were very good and I should have said you can find many Thanksgiving items.

Yup. DR1 Thanksgiving at Rocky's was so much fun those first years. I've looked for canned pumpkin, (found it one year) and jellied cranberry sauce often and no luck.
Ocean Spray cranberry sauce? That can be found everywhere.

I agree that there are restaurants that have T-Day dinners, but no supermercado has ALL the ingredients for a proper dinner

Well, ALMOST everywhere here in Cabarete and Sosua - Janet's, Pola, Playero. I need to remember to add "almost" to almost everything I post because there is always an exception. Corr: "almost" always an exception

Lots of items available on north coast only too……. Expat country
