It is like saying Rhode when you mean Rhode Island. Or United instead of United States.

Yeah I think I'd have a quick backhand for anybody who said:

"So, like, yer from the Yoonighted?"

I expect anyone from the UK would be doubly offended, but probably less violent.

I have never heard anybody but ditzy women say "The Dumminickin" though, and most of the stuff they say hurts my brain anyway.

Gee! Glad to see so many DR lovers are annoyed when their compatriots ignorantly omit a substantial part of the official countries' name and it seems to be a problem in just more than one language. I always refer to the DR as the ' DomRep'.

It seems like many a Dominican refer to the DR as SD. It used to make me grin (another low class act like omitting the 's') but I soon had to change my opinion on this one. Santo Domingo sounds way sexier than 'the Dominican (republic)'. And why not rename the capital 'Cristobal' or San Cristobal if you want :)

It has always sounded entirely awkward to me, just as if referring to The Check (Czech) Republic as "The Check." As in: "I just returned from a nice visit to the Check."

This one's easy. just follow the Czechs. It's 'Ceska republica' but any Czech refers to his country as 'Czechia'. Like in 'I just returned from a nice visit to Czechia and truly enjoyed Czech pivo' :)

Yeah, yeah Dominicana it is!

Porfio Rubirosa, you're right on the money. For lack of a better alternate name, Dominicana will have to do as the better term. Why did get stuck with an adjetive and a noun? Republica Dominicana? No good. Who suggested Quisquella? You have my vote. Hispaniola? I don't know.

Normally on this board and with friends "in the know" I always say the DR, but in any other circumstances it is always the Dominican Republic. Most English people tend to call it the Dominican which I just think is plain lazy and therefore typical of most Brits!

You are 100% correct, Nelly.

People that are familiar with obscure "knowledge" about something often times get offended by what others say when not technically correct.

Like any professional, for example, that nitpicks about someone not saying something quite technically correct. We had those guys in school, and still have them at work - they were/are annoying as hell.

We call it the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia instead of "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia", Congo instead of "The Democratic Republic of the Congo". Have you called it "The Islamic Republic of Iran" lately, or just Iran? How about "Democratic People's Republic of Korea"?

Libya has an official long form of "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya"! How about the local long form for this country of "Al Jumahiriyah al Arabiyah al Libiyah ash Shabiyah al Ishtirakiyah al Uzma".

Give me a break. If I had to type out or say any of these countries real names every time I told a story or typed an email, I'd slit my wrists.

Same for the DR. Although not grammatically correct, you guys are being anal about something very petty. How about focusing on the positive - more people are talking about your small country, and have a desire to travel there!

Educate as you see fit, and yes you are technically correct - but people getting pissed off about semantics reminds me of my neighbour's 10yr old kids who do the same because they're not old enough to know better.

You are wrong. Think about it and read through the thread before you respond. If you still think it's the same then it's just a waste of time trying to explain it to you.

Marc,

WRONG

Calling the DR the "Dominican" would be as if you called(I'll use the nations you mentioned)

The United States...."the United"
The United Kingdom...."The United"
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia"...."the Kingdom"
The Democratic Republic of the Congo...."The Democratic"
The Islamic Republic of Iran...."The Islamic"
Democratic People's Republic of Korea...."The Democratic"
Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya...."The Great"

BTW. I hardly call using proper language and grammer "anal"!

Dominican Repubili Vice dominica

I would have been one of to dumb jerks to say Dominican had I not already Known there was an island named Dominica. For me it was easier in conversations to Use the full name and I got in the habbit.
When refering to the United State of America as just America it is acceptable. Great Britan as Englan but yet England is only a small part of the United Kingdom or is it Great Briton. The Commom Wealth of Virginia is Known as Virginia. Wow I need another motrin.

I beg you...please tell me that you are kidding? Tell me that you really do understand the difference between the above statement and the subject at hand. My faith in the prowess and dominance of humanoids has been temporarily shaken.

Actually it would be as if calling the Dominican Republic the 'Republic' if you went with the theme of the places you listed...

Personally I don't see that much of a problem with people saying ro typing the 'Dominican' you see the 'States' and hear it too don't you? You see and hear the 'Congo' don't you?

Even if there is the problem of differentiation between 'Dominican' (or 'Dominicana) and 'Dominica', I don't think many would be calling it the 'Dominica' ... doesn't sound right.

But all this fret over the 'Dominican' is just a little over exaggerated.
