The Dominican Republic will crack down harder on migrants as Haitians flee violence.

Documented (we know exactly who you are and how you got into the country) vs undocumented (we have no idea who you are or how you got into the country)
Zero to do with overstays and long overdue in my opinion.

Luis is being more than fair. He is answering the human rights people along with the rights and concerns of Dominicans. Does this regulation include a woman that's about to give birth...I wonder?

That’s not the only thing. The quietness of the Haitian government regarding the Jet Set ordeal and that the DR was getting condolenscence from all over the world except from them who are the closest neighbor is something many people didn’t fail to notice. Then Mdme Duvalier (ex-First Lady or its equivalence to Haiti) blasting the Haitian government for not saying a word, calling them inhumane and reminding them that after the 2010 earthquake the first one to help Haiti was the DR. Only after that an official mention was given, but many Dominicans see that it wasn’t sincere but rather in response to Mdme Duvalier’s criticism.

In fact, the indignation in many Dominican media regarding this has gone as far as this guy suggesting the DR should stop taking Haiti into consideration and treat them the way Haiti’s government treats the DR.

As I said in that very post you quoted. The event happened on April 8, Mdme Duvalier posted her criticism on X regarding the silence of the Haitian government in April 9 and the Haitian government emitted a mention in April 10, after Mdme Duvalier’s post. By the time the Haitian government said anything the DR had already received multiple condolences from countries that are further away. During the 2010 earthquake the DR was the first to help given the geographic closeness.

The question should be why you simply ignored that part that the Haitian government reacted after the ex-Haitian First Lady criticism, which is very clear in that post, and precipitated to basically saying nothing.

The problem for Haitians is that at the moment there is practically no way to enter the DR legally.
I am well aware they often have problems obtaining IDs however in no way should it afford them special privileges.

I see. I didn't understand that when you said "Only after that an official mention was given" you were referring to the Haitian condolences, but now I do.

If the international community isn’t willing to do what it takes to intervene in Haiti and get rid of the gangs (since it’s obvious Haiti can’t handle that by itself), the DR has no choice but to strengthen its position against illegal flow of Haitians into the DR.

Some people seem to think the DR is the solution to Haiti’s problems. Mind you, problems that Haiti got into without Dominican input. If the world is washing its hands and basically saying “Haiti’s problems are Haiti’s,” the DR has no choice but to do the same. The DR should change its stance when the international community do more for Haiti.

People should get used to the idea that Haiti is its own country that ends at the border.

Also, given the DR is the only country with a land border with Haiti, it has to do more to discourage illegal immigration from Haiti than Haiti’s other neighbors Cuba and Jamaica. They have the sea as a border and that is an added protection that the DR doesn’t have with the mess that has become Haiti.
