For the first time since the administration of then President Juan Bosch in 1963, the Dominican Republic has withdrawn all of its staff from the embassy in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. In place, the DR has sent a unit of special troops to protect the embassy from the widespread violence now occurring on a daily basis. With most businesses shut down, the capital of Haiti is a ghost town, and reports are that only the numerous gangs roam the streets.
Last week, as reported by President Abinader to the OAS, the Dominican Republic issued instructions seeking to strengthen impediments for gangs to enter.
Rights, civil rights and law and order are just words in Haiti at the present time, with reports of a kidnapping every 11 hours, and the UN reporting nearly 800 murders in the first five months of the year.
