It just reminds me of a Brit that I met here a few years ago. He was selling his stuff. While I had done my best to go native by living in Padre Granero and making friends that still endure today, he came with big dreams. He wanted to run a bar. Not in Sosua, but in Puerto Plata fairly close to the fort. The Dominicans ate him alive. After sinking a huge amount of money into his bar, his employees were skimming left and right; that is, when they did work. The owner saw all his improvements and with the cruise ships docking, doubled his rent. His home was cleaned out, so he bought a large dog. They poisoned his dog and cleaned him out again. (He lived in a gated community). He was a nice enough guy which I think was his problem; just to naive. And, he made the ultimate mistake of not knowing the language and needing to rely on bilingual people that took advantage. No doubt, they were the same hyenas that robbed his house while he and his wife worked.

Unless they want to live in a 24x7 grated community ringed with barb wire and machine guns, I see Sosua appealing to only a small group of people.

Tamer country as ? Mexico Brazil ;)
The only other country that I'm familiar with is Nicaragua which is much, much safer than the DR. I've been looking for a Finca there for some time and I was closing in on a purchase when this shit storm hit. Had I known this was coming, I would have been more aggressive and I'd be planting Avocados and similar about now, but airports are still closed through August and probably beyond. Although I admit, the music sucks and the culture is much more conservative, but it reminds me of my grandparents neighbors in yet another time and place. Salt of the earth type of people (unless you live close to Honduras which is cut throat and I mean that literally).

I hear Costa Rica and Panama are also decent although I know nearly nothing about them other then traveling there a few times.

Frankly, most will just stay in the USA. Florida and Arizona do a good job of taking care of their elderly population and you can't get medicare outside the USA. Boomers have been conditioned to cling to whatever health care they can find and I doubt 99.9999% won't look outside of the box.

Some folks call casa Linda a retirement utopia. Some would say LT, and maybe less will think of PC. I think LT, also based on what you've mentioned, is an excellent choice. We already know the CL legacy

Adding here we need to remember most of this demographic no peaky panee and major deficit of cultural knowledge.

El Rey, I'm still working on your short hand...

LT - Las Teranas.
PC - Punta Cana
CL - ??

It is my sincere hope that the future of Sosua is with the locals. That the filth that has teamed up to pillage that town over the past 2 decades cease and desist. That the municipal officials grow spines and contribute to growth and development towards a clean, new, refreshing tourist environment. That the perversion, drugs and prostitution retreat to the barrios from which they came. We know the puntos And the whores will go on. Let's keep it under the radar like most of the country. Maybe families will be able to eat on Clisante without being pimped for fake Viagra. Maybe a shred of decency. Maybe some Dominican pride. Maybe the element can retreat to Boca Chica.

That said, next would be the wildood nj, seaside NJ tired strip of Cab and the lambón surfs up bruhs that don't contribute to the local economy other than padding the accounts of sankys and dime bad dealers. Maybe they find a way to collect the garbage. Maybe they clean up the disgusting eyesore of callejon, the dice games where the players shout out the worst Dominican curse words imagined. Maybe put rents in line instead of ripping off folks that have no idea that you don't pay 650 dollars to live on a drug, pap and herpes infected street.

or maybe I wake up in Zurich with 2 million bucks in my hand. Oh well.

Your DR bashing is endless isn't it.

So boring now. Like listening to the teacher in a Peanuts movie: wha wha wha whaa wha wha whaaaa whaaa..

I thought part of Punta Cana was retirement. Although in some cases it looks more like Florida and maybe attracts more higher middle and wealthy Dominicans and Latin Americans. With Samana I guess its just Las Terrenas or mainly around there. JD you are right has died down a bit again maybe more for Dominicans who can afford it but has the attraction of being close to capital and airport. Talking about Sosua and North Coast hasn’t Puerto Plata got some of that business
Maybe not for the average retiree, but wealthy retirees have 2nd homes and condos in Cap Cana.

When you look at Punta Cana overall it must be a very small percentage of the business there. Normally it looks kind of empty and now must feel more so.

I'm sure you're right.. Most of those in Cap Cana probably never go outside the confines of the property. If they need anything, they'll send the help to go get it.

The future of Sosua became the future of tourism in the DR. Seems kind of disorganized. Some high end in Punta Cana/Cap Cana but mostly mass tourism in the east. North Coast with Sosua, PoP and Cabarete. La Romana and Bayahibe and then Samana with LT. Typical for the DR with no real plan but some things turn out to work out quite well. Lets try some high rises in Punta Cana or lets try some ecotourism or maybe lets fix up the colonial zone in Santo Domingo. They throw a lot of projects up on the wall and see what sticks. A bit like the corona virus response.
