Interesting topic.. From what I see, hear and read... A few people are not all that
concerned about the permit process. My opinion, with so many people with their
hands out... why the hell should they?

Start at the 5:00 minute mark.

Guess in depends on the location. Here in Jarabacoa the municipal government is very quick to shutdown construction if all permits are not in place before construction starts.

In Sosua/Cabarete we have LifeStyles, illegal blockage of the road at Encuentro, an illegal collection of houses built on filled in public park wetlands where a few thousand people live, etc.

Even with the construction of one Marriot hotel and the re-pavement of the road, the future is very uncertain for Sosua... lol There are many under developed destinations in warm places with a beach.

Golf course villas and people who collect art and etc.. hmmmm Some nice places are really expensive and boring with unhappy condescending know it all rich bastards trying to dominate the surroundings.

I hope the price of a flight to POP comes down and is competitive with other destinations and there are more flights from different places. That would help the area grow the most...imho...

The flights will not come back unless there is a demand for them. With the way this area of the north coast is going with respect to more retirees versus stagnant growth of tourists, any improvement in flights is a long shot.

I suspect that the number of flights into POP will continue to diminish over time. If the direct flights to Canada end, I'll have to consider moving. I'm not interested in traveling from the North Coast to SD or PC to catch a flight.

Ease of access, another consideration when deciding to live in this area.

You won't wait for the Bullet Train to be built to take you from the north coast to Santiago or Santo Domingo?

My needs to fly are not great, just a time or two at most a year. The really bad connections to be had when flying from POP to the western part of the US cuts my desire even more. I like the west coast far better than the east coast. We have visited Canada recently and have no reason to go back any time soon unless that trip were perhaps to Vancouver.

Hopefully flights to Canada will continue since there are quite a few Canadians that like to spend winters on the north coast or live here full time.

The tourist trade is what is keeping the two Cdn airlines flying here. They both operate their own vacation business and as long as POP resorts provide an income the flights will continue. Westjet has been sold so it is up in the air as to what changes are looming for that airline. Air Canada remains a costlier option but for how long, no one can say.

I don't need a bullet train, just a direct option that doesn't require hopping on a milk run and having to transfer to a different carrier part way. Leaving home the day before a flight and overnighting is inconvenient and an added expense of both money & time. However, one must be prepared to adapt to changes as nothing stays the same forever.

Just saw this on a local Facebook page:

News this morning is that Condor Airlines have received bridging financing from the German government and the Hessen regional government and will continue flying for the foreseeable future.

Good news for me - I am booked with them in a couple of weeks.

Good news for Sosua - they have flights scheduled to POP starting early November.

Future still uncertain.

...And this could come to an end if they finally start demanding that all snowbirds have Residency. Oops! I think I mentioned the taboo subject!

My brother-in-law, an architect, has been hired by a guy in Santiago who tried building a nice residencia for SFHs without permits.

He was totally shut down by the ayuntamiento and threatened with jail if he moves one more rock.

My b-i-l's job is to obtain the permits and officially oversee the construction abides by the codes inspectors require, I do not know what they are, just each inspector can red-tag a construction project if codes are not met.

That is not to say no corruption exists. But from what I've personally experienced, there is much less corruption in building projects today vs. 12 years ago.

AE has 11 hotels closing in the DR.

Sosua beach is a wasteland these days.
I know it is slow time but it seems to be more than just slow season.
The rocky beach does not help. Pray for surf this winter and the return of sand.

Are things equally slow in Cabarete?

Wonder if it is going to be tough times ahead for Sosua and the entire country.

Good news for our monger posters as prices for punananny should drop and the girls will be skinnier.

Cabarete has been dead for years. September has always been the slowest month. So I imagine it is even more dead.

...The tourist business in the entire country, may indeed be in for tough times... I say this because when I talk to friends and family in USA, and ask when are you coming this winter many are saying we will be going to a new place somewhere safer.....yes the bad press has worked. the travel warning from the USA is at a level 2, a level 3 or 4 will have major ramifications... the government here needs to find a way to reduce crime in the whole country..if people remember The D.R. learned the A.I. business mostly from Jamaica...The people I worked for in about the year 2000 would give the management a free 1 week vacation for 2 plus spending money...Jamaica was always the island, then in about 2003 they started sending us to the D.R.... that's how fast things changed...I don't think the media will stop printing every story they can find about dead tourists or ones that are victims of crime in the Dominican Republic... look at has happened to mexico and their tourism the drug cartels and the carnage they leave have closed most of their Pacific coast to Americans, as it is now a no travel area, the oldest beach town Acapulco, is all but closed.. most of my friends who spent most of the year on that Pacific coast sold their condos, houses any property they own and will never go back...If that can happen to Mexico, a country that is larger and vastly richer. what Chance does the Dominican Republic Have? the government needs to clean up the ladrones, and the resorts need to stop lying by saying ohh that was natural causes or it never happened...Tourists can go many places on vacation, by just getting on a different plane...…..Doc...….

The DR grossly mishandled the tourist death problem and seemed to be caught unprepared.
There was never any coordination of the stories and still today it is unsettled.
Friends ask me today what was the final determination?
If there was one I missed it.

If the world economy slows the DR could be in a world of hurt.
