We're in another cottage cheese drought here in Sosúa. Can't find it for love nor money. I even spoke to the owner at Playero, and he says he has no idea.

So imagine---if you can---my euphoria when I found the store brand, Food Club, at Jumbo on Friday. I bought two containers and was just squiggly with joy all the way home, thinking about cottage cheese on one of my delicious homemade bagels.

Well: this stuff is so salty I spit out the first bite. I thought, maybe it needs to be colder. Tried it again this morning. Spit it out. Checked the ingredients and sure enough, salt is the third ingredient, right after milk & skim milk. I was thinking maybe it could work in a lokshen kugel......but that sort of defeats the purpose of cottage cheese, as a quick, low-cal, low-fat snack. Unfortunately, I think the Food Club cottage cheese is headed for the garbage.

Anybody else have this experience?

Dominicans love salt. That's one of my major complaints about many of the deli items at Playero - too much salt.

It's surprising Playero doesn't have cottage cheese now. Usually, if Playero doesn't have something, Janet's won't either. I saw Breakstone cottage cheese in Janet's yesterday. They've had in in stock frequently lately.

We have been buying Lucerne no salt added cottage cheese, but I do not think I have seen this brand in the DR. There are so many things I no longer buy because they just are too salty. My tolerance for salty foods has gone down over the years, maybe more sensitive to it now.

The other day I was in Bravo and they had Cabot Cottage cheese. Cabot, as in Vermont. How in the world does that work it's way here instead of Breakstone??

I bought everything they had. At this point, I'll take anything I can get. It really wasn't too bad-very creamy for sure.

In the States, Breakstones had lost a significant market position to Daisy and Good Culture brands. Maybe that has affected exports. Good Culture is a superior product.

In Florida, I always bought the Publix store brand. I liked it more than Breakstone's and it came in both large and small curd. Cheaper, too.

I like salt a lot and would love to try the Food Club brand. However I'm not that big on cottage cheese.

When you get used to a low salt diet, you begin to taste the salt in normal foods (especially with meats.) Many years ago after a month (minus 8 days 😬) of being in a hospital, after discharged I began to feel the salt in all things normal that I never felt it before. Even in white rice! With chicken I couldn’t getbeyond the salt while everybody else thought it tasted good.

The low salt diet they put me on in the hospital meant that I went from 180lbs which I doesn’t matter what I do or if I get careless, weight hardly goes beyond that level, while a month later I was above 160lbs. That’s the biggest weight loss I ever had.

Regardless of brand, the simple process of skimming down the list of ingredients on packaged foods, one should be able to identify so-called garbage. The following are the major "garbage factor or stroke diet", if you will, ingredients from a high level viewpoint:

Trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils), high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), artificial sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, saccharin), refined sugar, sodium nitrate/nitrite, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1), palm oil, preservatives (BHA and BHT), refined grains (white flour, processed wheat), sodium benzoate, carrageenan, potassium bromate, propyl gallate, artificial flavorings, corn syrup solids, sulfites, sodium lauryl sulfate, polysorbate 80, titanium dioxide.

That's like 80% of my diet.

Why not just make it yourself .
Cottage Cheese, is as easy as it gets .

This woman explains it really well .. very thorough.

Americans are the most spoiled people .. Our Grandparents would be ashamed of us . they made their own , Canning fruits and Veg, ,made cheeses, smoked Meats . My great grandmother as I recall even made her own Soap.
Why do people gripe so much about Stores , when you can do it yourself and get a much better product with none of the Garbage added .

just sayin
