Environmental protection agents in the Dominican Republic were violently attacked and threatened with firearms when ambushed while transporting a truck seized for illegal sand mining, Diario Libre reports.

Members of the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa) had apprehended a truck and its driver in San Cristóbal province for allegedly extracting sand illegally. While transporting the seized vehicle to their headquarters, they were confronted by a group of men believed to be part of a local truckers’ union. At gunpoint, the assailants forced the Senpa agents out of the truck and retrieved the seized vehicle. Backup that was near arrived and the situation was eventually de-escalated. We ordered a few loads of sand last week, it looked ‘uncleaned’ to me so I am pretty sure it came directly from Rio Yubazo. Last year I saw an illegal sand pit at the river north of San Cristobal, piles of sand waiting to be picked up. Easy money for these guys.

It’s a bit hypocritical for the government to try to stop sand removal when they turn a blind eye to people infilling marshes and watercourses to build houses, developers building resorts and placing pavement and concrete over everything, and then refusing to take any responsibility for the resulting flooding . A band aid over a sucking chest wound.

Seems like every single time I read the news they talk about the construction of a new hotel, plaza or resort. No way can they stop this problem.

We live in San Cristobal province. It’s not only sand. We frequently see water trucks parked near streams, sucking out the water into their tank, usually after dark

I frequently see articles about people being arrested for stealing sand and trucks and other vehicles and mining machines being confiscated.
