And to the OP. No, I am pretty sure there was no racial connotation to those words. There are few really racially derogatory words in Dominican Spanish, if any, it's all in the context and the combination of words.
Last when our friend Luz was leaving she said to her 12 years daughter, Vamos, me negra. Certainly a term of endearment because she is very affection with her daughter.

Diablo does not mean anything black, is the word for devil that Dominicans use a lot. If someone called the OP un Diablo, its probably nothing good, it could mean evil, or corrupt.
Cubans call everyone Mi negro/negra.......no matter what color skin they have. Dominicans use it also......My daughter is as dark as Chips daughter and only when we go to the DR people call her Negra.

"Diablo" does not always carry a negative connotation. For instance, if I say MAR is a "diablo" fixing computers that means you are really good at that, but if I say that "fixing computers" MAR is a "Diablo a Caballo" that means you are the best technician, no one is above you. Think about it, as powerful as the devil is and on top of that put him on a horse (Diablo a Caballo), is not even fair right?.
I see the basic point is that diablo has nothing to do with color...probably size if ANYTHING..because he was a child...like in americans context "that lil devil!"
