6 passengers from Canada arrived at the La Romana airport with 11 suitcases - with 509 packages of Marijuana

Seven Canadians arrested with 509 packages of marijuana upon arrival at La Romana airport:

Seven Canadian citizens were arrested upon arriving in the Dominican Republic at La Romana International Airport for their alleged connection to 11 suitcases loaded with suspected marijuana that were detected in one of its terminals.

The detainees, four men and three women, were captured during a monitoring and interdiction operation led by theNational Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the General Directorate of Customs (DGA), the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESAC) and the National Police.

The discovery came after an exhaustive security check using X-ray technology revealed the presence of illegal substances in the luggage of the travellers from Toronto. Upon opening the 11 suitcases, the agents discovered 509 packages of suspected marijuana, along with several portions of other drugs that are still being analysed.

Following this seizure, authorities believe that this is a network that brings controlled substances from Canada through the country's airports, due to previous operations related to this in Punta Cana, where 169 bales of marijuana and a package of what is presumed to be crack were seized.
Authorities suspect drug traffickers are using direct air routes, suggesting a transnational operation with multiple entry points into the country.

The shipment was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) to determine its exact weight and composition. Meanwhile, those arrested will be handed over to the courts in the next few hours, while investigations are intensified to dismantle this dangerous drug trafficking network.

That's like taking you grandmother to a strip club.
Not logical.
And how did their bags get past security in Canada? Or has Canada abandoned luggage screening?

And not to be outdone.. The DNCD stopped a shipment of 548 packages of Cocaine in Pedernales:

CARGO SEIZED IN THE COSTAS PEDERNALES IS COCAINE
Santo Domingo.- The National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) reported on Tuesday that the shipment of 548 packages seized through a joint operation with the Navy (ARD) and the Air Force (FARD), on the coasts of the province of Pedernales, tested positive for controlled substances.
According to the analysis carried out by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF), the stash had a total weight of 564.65kilograms of cocaine.
Two Dominicans are in prison for the case. They were caught aboard a speedboat south of Isla Beata with 19 bales of the substance, containing 548 packages of the drug.
The Public Prosecutor's Office and the DNCD continue to expand the investigative process to determine if there are other people involved in the failed international drug trafficking operation.
Communications Directorate, DNCD.-

And can't leave out Punta Cana:
DNCD SEIZES TWO SUITCASES WITH 79 PACKAGES OF MARIJUANA AT PUNTA CANA AIRPORT
Santo Domingo.- Agents of the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and members of the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESAC), coordinated by the Public Ministry, within the framework of the expansion of joint interdiction operations, seized 79 packages of marijuana at the Punta Cana International Airport, La Altagracia province.
Agents and military personnel,They were carrying out inspection operations when they located two suitcases in the arrivals area of the terminal. When they were examined in one of the X-ray machines, discrepant images were observed, and a more exhaustive verification was carried out.
Following the prosecutor's instructions, the two suitcases were opened, finding 45 packages in one of them and another 34 in another piece of luggage, for a total of 79 packages of marijuana, wrapped in transparent and black plastic bags.
The Public Prosecutor's Office and the DNCD have launched an investigation because the luggage, which arrived on a flight from Toronto, was not claimed and instead was left abandoned in one of the airport's arrivals areas.
It is recalled that last weekend, at the same Punta Cana terminal, 90 bales of marijuana and a package of crack were confiscated, so investigative agencies do not rule out that the cases are related.
The authorities, with the support of other official bodies stationed at airport and port terminals, continue to increase joint interventions against illicit drug trafficking, managing to thwart multiple illegal international drug trafficking operations.
Communications Directorate, DNCD.-

"Oh but they never check the bags there."
LRM is different than any other airport in the DR. They don't have many flights and nothing to do. They check EVERYTHING, and I mean everything. You have a lot of coffee going out in a bag you will have a problem. Taking in electronics go to PUJ. They search carry ons with a fine tooth comb.........

Pot is legal in Canada. So, I doubt they look for it. Seems obvious that is why nobody cared in Canada.

No Windy. This is stupidity. That amount of weed in anyone’s possession would be illegal in Canada. I suspect it’s weed not produced at government approved facilities in Canada. Obviously the drug cartels need a better class of mules. So do the money launderers. 260 people on one flight all carrying luggage packed with money. Stupid!

Luggage in Canada is subject to X-ray scanning and random dog sniffer checks like all International airports. Again, it would have been more beneficial to track the weed to the buyers and suppliers in the DR. There is something odd (corruption?) about the drug seizure procedures in the DR. Wouldn’t be surprised if fentanyl was part of that shipment. Illegal labs in Canada are producing it for shipment to Australia and other countries. The DR has become a transshipment country for cocaine and other drugs.

I’ve seen that before in small towns where folks don’t check signs or just follow someone blindly thinking it’s okay. Common sense flies out the window real quick sometimes.

“Ah, the DR is a Third World country where a little money goes a long way in turning heads and making law enforcement blind…” or so they thought.

They didn’t read the small letters that say “this doesn’t apply to drug trafficking.”

You are correct, they would have needed more than a little money.
