6 passengers from Canada arrived at the La Romana airport with 11 suitcases - with 509 packages of Marijuana
Seven Canadians arrested with 509 packages of marijuana upon arrival at La Romana airport:
Seven Canadian citizens were arrested upon arriving in the Dominican Republic at La Romana International Airport for their alleged connection to 11 suitcases loaded with suspected marijuana that were detected in one of its terminals.
The detainees, four men and three women, were captured during a monitoring and interdiction operation led by theNational Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the General Directorate of Customs (DGA), the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESAC) and the National Police.
The discovery came after an exhaustive security check using X-ray technology revealed the presence of illegal substances in the luggage of the travellers from Toronto. Upon opening the 11 suitcases, the agents discovered 509 packages of suspected marijuana, along with several portions of other drugs that are still being analysed.
Following this seizure, authorities believe that this is a network that brings controlled substances from Canada through the country's airports, due to previous operations related to this in Punta Cana, where 169 bales of marijuana and a package of what is presumed to be crack were seized.
Authorities suspect drug traffickers are using direct air routes, suggesting a transnational operation with multiple entry points into the country.
The shipment was sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) to determine its exact weight and composition. Meanwhile, those arrested will be handed over to the courts in the next few hours, while investigations are intensified to dismantle this dangerous drug trafficking network.
