The Dominican U-20 soccer (football) men’s team has qualified for the World U-20 Championships in Indonesia and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. To prepare for these major sports events, the team will play to matches against a similar selection from Colombia this month. On 24 September 2022, the teams will meet in the Cibao F.C. Stadium in Santiago and on 27 September they will meet at the Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo.

The importance of these preparatory matches cannot be exaggerated as the Dominican selection is slated to participate in the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador, the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile and then the Olympics in Paris. The thread title had me excited but soccer isn't football.
It is however more exciting than watching sand blow over the Malecón.

Or is it.....?
The sport is known as football in all countries of the world except for a couple of backward ones. Here in the DR it's known as football. It's the world's most popular sport, so it seems you are in the minority.

What is the proper name for the "other" football?
We could say American Football and European Football. This forum I think has a majority of North American posters/readers and the Dominicans are only interested in Pelota.

Well, in South Africa "football" aka soccer is religion. In the U.S the reason soccer exists in school is for the kids that can't make the football, baseball and basketball teams. In the D.R, EVERY sport plays second fiddle to baseball.

Basketball for the men and Volleyball for the women is quite big in the DR.

As I have always said...take a game that already has a name and make it "your" national sport. The only issue is, the only time you use your foot is when you screwed up so bad you have to give the ball to the other team or kick a consolation. And after it all, with no on else invited...proclaim yourselves "world champions".

Probably the world's most popular...because anybody can play it and it's FREE. Unlike real football which need genetics, talent, etc, proper equipment which all cost money.
