The registration process for domestic help is set to begin this month, according to Labor Minister Luis Miguel de Camps. Back in September of 2022, the Abinader administration issued resolutions that put in place a much more formal structure regarding domestic help.

Now, this month, the process will require the registration of these persons and their incorporation into the Dominican Social Security System. This also includes coverage of minimum wage regulations and medical issues under government health programs, maternity leave and pension plans.

This applies to 'Full time' help.... as I understand it.

Can we clarify/define the difference between Full & Part Time help ??

The daily wage for domestic workers will be approximately 419.63 pesos, calculating the minimum wage established by the Ministry of Labor, which is 10,000 pesos per month, between the average number of working days, which is 23.83, according to the formula shared on the website of said ministry.

Since mid-December 2022, people who informally employ domestic workers are called to start a registration process in the Ministry of Labor database, where they must indicate the labor agreement with their working hours and salary.

To help employers calculate the salary they must pay to those who help them with domestic work, the ministry published a formula to establish monthly, biweekly, weekly, daily and even hourly payments, depending on the method and periodicity in which the service will be paid. The instructions do not segment salaries by type of domestic work (gardening, laundry, childcare ...).

Diario Libre carried out the exercise of identifying the salaries corresponding to each payment period based on the indications published in the ministry's instructional guide, which indicates that the salary must be agreed between both parties to carry out the labor contract.

In the case of employers who agree on the minimum wage on a weekly basis, fulfilling eight hours of daily work for five days, they would have to pay 2,500 pesos each week. In that line, the payment per day comes out to 454.54 pesos.

There will be some initial resistance to this, but they’ll come around. Most people in places like Santo Domingo are already paying way more than minimum wage.

Clearly!. I pay $2.00 /hour for hard work in the hot sun.To Haitians. And BTW I have no desire, if suggested here, to pay any less.

2.00 USD/hour = 108.6 DOP
108.6 DOP x 8 hours = 868.8 DOP/day
Seems to be very reasonable rate of pay.

I pay by the project so I don't know the hourly costs.
I let each worker figure out how hard they want to work each day.

Very common in campo. Mr AE hires like that all the time, but those aren’t regular/full time employees. When they’re done, they get paid.

I don't understand why anyone would want to:
Be a full time employee
Hire a full time employee
Especially in the world of Domestic help.
Dominicans need to expand their scope of thought
Move beyond the exploitation on the wage slave plantations, think for themselves and go into business for themselves.

Domestic crew:
Crew leader
Cook
Cleaning
Laundry person
Enter the house and perform all duties in 4 hours.
Two houses a day, just one crew.
Fixed price each visit.

Dominicans need to do for themselves...not wait for the government to do for them.

This is absurd. I released my help in December when I first got wind of this. How many Dominican "middleclass" families will be able to deal with this? None, most likely. It won't matter to the rich, as they use mostly bonded services. I paid a very nice IMO [12k/month] to a five day/week maid. Always looking for an advance, never able to pay it back. In one day, out the next, diarrhea, blood sugar, hang over, in clinic, daughter sick, grandkids sick, power cut. I've had more than my share of domestic labor, being taken advantage of, stolen from (even toilet paper!) - Now the government is mandating us to employ these people as if we were Dominican business corporations. These domestic help folks are problematic. They are always on the lookout for a way to get the gringos to pay up. They steal and don't show up, they want the same fixed pay, they eat in and take food home as well; but you can't fire them without paying through the nose. I'm over it. I'm sure someone else will be happy to have them.

Just wondering. Are there maid services where you pay the company for a maid or other workers for the day? That way you just pay the cleaning company and they have to deal with all the taxes.

Yes, there is Jan. Quite expensive, then you can listen to the maid complaining to you about how little she receives.

I think they are used mainly by mid sized companies and up and families who can afford them.

Re: Dealing with taxes---Put the maid in the Johnny Cash file folder. No tax due.
