Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz is calling for Dominicans to increase their consumption of plantains due to a significant overproduction of the staple.

“We encourage all Dominicans to take advantage of this opportunity to consume more plantains and, in doing so, save money on their grocery bills,” Minister Cruz stated.

The official noted that the country has been experiencing an overproduction of plantains for several weeks, with daily production increasing from 8 million to 11 million units after a shortage caused major price increases.

This substantial increase in production has led to a significant decrease in the price of plantains for consumers, Cruz highlighted.

We have never bought them, just like avocado’s there are always enough in the backyard. While I love fresh avocado’s I am not a big fan of platanos. I prefer them sliced, fried and with mayonnaise!

We produced too much so eat more crap? Supply and demand - lower the price of them and Dominicans will gobble that pasty staple.

Maduro, boil, top with red onions & vinegar. Not bad.
Yes, onion rings are obligatory...

Fritos, maduros, sliced maduros as a side dish, mangu with eggs you name it... Even while in EU we keep platanos in our diet. It's obviously more expensive but...

Best ones are those my brother-in-law brings in huge branches from the campo... They usually don't last long...

I like the maduro...quick to boil up or slice smaller and put them in a spicy stewed dish. I like to put some hot sauce on them too :)

it seems more often than Potatoes , which it is I guess.
As far as I have understood, this is exactly the case. I have only ever eaten potatoes in the DR mashed, so mashed potatoes. Not prepared that often and mostly as dinner... At least in our case... My mother-in-law, having cooked her entire life, does not really consider potatoes food though... A meal has to have either rice or plantains or it's not a meal... I don't complain though...
