Wasn't more than half of that from one small part of Pedro Clisante in Sosua? 😇

But seriously now, that $3.8 Billion US number puts in perspective how much those few hundred, if that many "gentlemen" in Sosua, the several thousands of expats throughout the DR, and the 6 month snowbirds contribute is just a drop in the ocean compared to the tourism that the DR government focuses in on for its revenue. AI Resorts and Cruise ships are the "ocean" here.

You do have to admire the Ministry of Tourism and their spin.

First it was an announcement in July that tourism had rebounded to pre-pandemic levels...........it had not;

Then it was the statistics regarding the alleged number of vaccinated people in Altagracia Province with a first dose at 99+%;

Now they are touting how well they are doing compared to 2020 (DR was virtually shut down for tourism in 2020).

3.8 billion says the headline....................but compare it to pre-pandemic times..................not even close.

Tourism generated almost 7.5 billion pre-pandemic (2019)..............but you have to love their optimism.

Yearly tourism income and arrivals will not likely exceed pre-pandemic levels until at least the end of 2022.

Correct me if I am wrong, the $3.8 Billion US number is not what has been received as Govt revenue, but states what has been generated in the tourism industry.

The number that stands out by far is in remittances ( US$7.9 billion } for 2021 . Now I know why there are more W.U. in the DR than churches and colmados combined.

Correct.

That figure, to use an economics term, is the "multiplier effect" on the economy based on the tourist dollars spent.

A 7.5 Billion USD number would be doubly effective to enhance the point I made in post #2 of this thread.
