According to data from the Permanent Observatory of Road Safety, (Opsevi) of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transport (Intrant), deaths in traffic accidents were 3,024 people not the 2,095 reported in the Transit Safety Agency (Digesett) Bulletin No. 01-2020 in 2019.

El Caribe newspaper reports that traffic accidents from January to December 2019 more than double the homicides (1,206 deaths). Using the observatory numbers, the deaths and about 50% more than the number of Covid-19 deaths so far this year. As of 19 October deaths for Covid-19 were at 2,204.

It'll be interesting to see the 2020 figures, which are projected to be lower because of the lockdown/curfew.

That is typical. It is one of the easiest problems to solve but where there is no will there is no way.

It would be nice if there was a little bird who could suggest this to Big Louie.

Appears the odds of you being
a victim
in a car accident in the DR are
higher than
you dying of Covid.

The President, along with anyone who has even visited the country for more than a few days, is fully aware of this. In spite of his personal wealth and success beyond the political arena, Abinader is as beholden to Juan Hubieres as all his predecessors. Luis does not need the presidency so the concho voting bloc is not the issue for him. They are so numerous they could ruin his businesses. Hubieres controls the "dueños del país". They are the root of the traffic problems.

Hubieres is one of the more notorious transport "union" leaders. They are known as los dueños del país - the owners of the country. So many people work as drivers of conchos, buses, cargo vehicles, etc. that they can bring the country to a halt if mobilised by their leaders.

Juan Hubieres....the Dominican version of James Hoffa.
He and his Teamsters Union were once very powerful.
We know what happened to Mr. Hoffa, or do we?
What will happen with Sr. Hubieres?

Chrimoya summed it up well. Is there some part of it that still isn't clear?:

Chirimoya posted her response to NanSanPedro's question 2 hours and 37 minutes later.
She did a good job in responsding.
Is it necessary to be so vitriolic with him?
I believe it was an honest question seeking an answer. I also believe you should incorporate more fruit into your diet.

Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters is an interesting comparison. Clearly Hoffa and Hubieres have much more in common than the Teamsters and the Dominican transport unions have in common. Unlike their Dominican counterparts, few if any Teamsters have ever been separated from hunger and homelessness by only a handful of 25 peso fares. Just like Hoffa, Hubieres presents himself as someone who takes on the political establishment and supports his union members. Also like Hoffa, however, Hubieres is part and parcel of the political establishment. Time will tell what the future holds for him. I can't comment further about the conchos without losing my shit.
