Tragedy has again struck on the Samana tolls road, piously named John Paul II in honor of the Roman Catholic Church pope. The road is regarded as one of the most dangerous in the country because it seems too easy and drivers get carried away and speed on.

In the Friday, 6 August 2021 accident, one person died when a commuter bus crashed with a Mercedes Benz SUV. The deceased was identified as 37-year old Jonathan García, who was collecting fares on the bus.

The accident occurred at around 6pm on Friday, 6 August 2021 at the crossing of Bayaguana.

Most of the injured were taken to the Angel Contreras provincial hospital in Monte Plata. The seriously injured were taken to the Ney Arias Lora Trauma Hospital and Darío Contreras Trauma Hospital in Santo Domingo.

I wonder which one of them was speeding and driving reckless?

For people that have never drove this road. It is not a divided hwy and it has a lot of serious curves to navigate. It does not get more dangerous than this road.

I can only imagine... The road between Puerto Plata and Navarrete now includes quite a few extra lanes for passing traffic... The problem is, people use these lanes in the opposite directions... This year we've had to be in Santiago almost in a weekly basis and have learned how to navigate it, but first time after the new lanes when we came back from Santiago, I had to do an emergency braking just before the bridge crossing the river in Imbert as I was passing a truck on the left lane in the curve and realized that another vehicle, coming from Imbert towards Altamira was on my lane, coming from the opposite direction... We ended up just fine, thanks for very short reaction time and years of experience of driving here, but I did shout a list of heavy expletives at that moment and ended up shaking a bit...

I can't believe how many drivers just have trash between their ears here... Unfortunately...

Yes but this accident was at a horrible intersection where the traffic on the autopista Santo Domingo to Samana have the right over traffic on the Monte Plata to Bayaguana ..The intersection is at an angle with much traffic using the Texaco gasoline station and cafeteria which is right at the corner. It should have flashing lights at the least .

The highway is very straight at that point though. So I think this was probably due the high speed and crossing without looking rather than negotiating a tight bend.

If they couldn't build a highway straighter than that through a relatively non-mountainous area, it's going to be interesting to see how they do it between Santiago and Puerto Plata.
