In the hills of Bahoruco, in the deep southwest of the Dominican Republic, a -3°C was registered late last week. In the Southwest, the mountains of the Sierra de Bahoruco rise close to 7800 feet (2367 mt). The mountain range is the second highest in the Caribbean. Newspapers carried photos of frost-covered fields and plants, looking like a light snowfall. So, it is true: the Dominican Republic does have everything.
In the central mountain areas of Valle Nuevo and Constanza, similar readings were recorded. In cities and towns in the Cibao, early dawn temperatures of 12°C were common. All this resulted from an Artic blast that froze much of the United States, and dropped into the tropics for a few days.
