I have read that if you try to do an UBER from Punta Cana Airport that the taxi drivers will do some bad stuff.

No. The taxi Union is now Uber Select, and the regular Uber is Uber X. Both appear in your app. Order the one you prefer.
So i can grab an uber X right at the airport and have him take me to la romana without a problem
In reality, the UberX rate will likely be too low for the driver, and you'll probably need to negotiate the rate separately or pay extra to him.
I recently had a terrible experience trying to take UBER from Santiago Airport STI to Sosua.
3 times a driver met me, drove a few feet, and wanted to negotiate the $ and they wanted cash.
Very frustrating as the reason I take UBER is because all that is pre-handled.
Each time I refused. UBER charged me twice, 40 cents and $1.60 US for cancelling the rides. I called my CC company and refused to pay these small amounts.
The whole experience was ridiculous and I will never do it again.
