Received Level 4 Notice…Do Not Travel to DR re Covid etc. Jan 24, 2022
What is going on? No extraordinary notice from any authorities re uptick in numbers? No one talking?
I looked at the state department website and found no such message. Keep in mind the obvious. The DR has become an extremely powerful player in the Caribbean tourism industry. The competition in that area is willing to say anything or do anything to take from that. Florida is losing their butt along with many of the islands around there. Everyone around the world wants to go to DR. The last big hoax was reports that Americans have become targets. The FBI sent a team down and nothing ever came of that. So, just enjoy the beautiful DR and its people.

U.S. raises travel alert to Dominican Republic due to covid and crime....

In September last year, the alert was lowered to level two.

Santo Domingo, DR
The United States Department of State increased the alert for travel to the Dominican Republic, increasing it to level four due to the “incidence of the coronavirus and citizen insecurity.”
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a level 4 travel health advisory level, due to a very high level of covid-19 in the country,” indicates a statement from the entity.
In addition, they indicate to their US citizens to be careful when visiting the Dominican Republic due to the recorded crime.
A description that they identify as a “summary of the country” indicates that violent crimes, including armed robberies, homicides, and sexual assaults, are a cause for concern in the Dominican territory.
They also cite that “the wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system all contribute to the high level of crime on a broader scale.”
The detail is that the non-urban areas of the country do not have security and that the city, thanks to “a professional tourist police force, a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in tourist areas,” tend to be better guarded.
They recommended their citizens “to be careful in the environment once they attend the country, not to physically resist any robbery attempt, not to show signs of wealth such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.”
Likewise, “follow the advice of tour operators and the resort regarding local security and safety concerns.”
Last alert
In September last year, the department declined to two alert levels for the Dominican Republic and eliminated the recommendation to its citizens to “reconsider travel” to the country.
This alert level is considered moderate and implies that travelers must “exercise greater caution” in relation to the health situation once they enter the country

I understand their statement about crime and it is definitely warranted/ something tourist need to be aware of when traveling down here however their advice about Covid is garbage.
Is it any worse than safety in New York ?

Crime needs to be taken seriously especially if you're coming from one of these kumbaya countries like Denmark where you're more likely to catch frostbite than two in the face during an armed robbery.
It's not something to joke about as some of these PN work in tandem with the criminals too. Welcome to Wonderland!

The police working in tandem with criminals against foreigners/expats is a level of toxic nationalism I can't comprehend.
It's the dark side of Dominican nationalism.

Like the lawyers who helped a local in Puerto Plata screw her gringo/Swiss wife to steal her property recently.
Then the dude eventually killed her.

Now I see the notice. But I would avoid travel to Florida before avoiding the DR.

Anyone found a warning for travel to Puerto Rico from the mainland USA? Oh wait...

Lets not forget that unlike the DR, most tourists to PR aren't on an all inclusive package where most spend most or all of their time inside a resort.

What percentage of tourists are victims of any crime in the DR?

Plop...

The recent increase in US Covid deaths due to supposedly mild Omicron infections may be the result of a large part of the older segment of the population being unvaccinated, or having preconditions like obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Complicating factors that lessen their ability to survive even a mild Covid infection. That’s what’s happening in Canada. The 60 to 80 age group has the highest number of Omicron related deaths for the same reasons.

Regarding the latest US government DR travel warning, crime stats were down during the curfew. Maybe the crime rate has increased since then and warranted a new State Department warning and increased level of risk. The DR Covid warning is bullshit, given that the US Covid death rate will probably exceed the one million mark before the pandemic subsides.

I don't know if you live here but we're still on the business end of drug induced homicides. I do not see crime abating. I've been here a long time.
