Alert: Ongoing Dominican Migration Enforcement

Alert: Ongoing

Dominican Migration Enforcement

This message is to advise U.S. citizens that in recent months travelers to the Dominican Republic have reported being delayed, detained, or subject to heightened questioning at ports of entry and in other encounters with immigration officials based on their skin color. Reports of disparate treatment of U.S. citizens by Dominican authorities are a matter of ongoing concern to the U.S. Embassy.

In addition, in recent days, as reported in Dominican media, Dominican Migration (DGM) agents have conducted widespread operations aimed at detaining those they believe to be undocumented migrants, especially persons of Haitian descent. In some cases, authorities have not respected these individuals’ legal status in the Dominican Republic or nationality. These actions may lead to increased interaction with Dominican authorities, especially for darker skinned U.S. citizens and U.S. citizens of African descent. There are reports that detainees are kept in overcrowded detention centers, without the ability to challenge their detention, and without access to food or restroom facilities, sometimes for days at a time, before being released or deported to Haiti.

Please report any such incidents immediately to the Embassy emergency number (809) 567-7775 and to the Defensor del Pueblo at (809) 381-7777.

The Embassy advises U.S. citizens to:

Carry your passport with you.
Carry a charged cell phone and notify the Embassy immediately if you need assistance.

well I am going to lightly weigh in. Why is it travelers that are professionally attired never seem to have problems or confrontations. It's almost always someone dressed as a gangster and more importantly acting like an idiot when questioned by the authorities at the airport.

Ummm. I don't get this thread. Isn't race talk forbidden on this forum?

Too bad I can't say what happened to me TWICE at Dominican airports.
The post is a advisory/alert from the US Embassy for US citizens. I for one find it helpful.

Are you saying/implying the US Embassy is lying ❓
Do you have any facts to back it that up❓
Or once again simply expressing your opinion❓
Opinion based on actual events. This administration is full of woke personel that find sexism and racism everywhere. The DR isnt quite so PC, yet. Remember the Embassy had the DR at a level four for covid that was and is under very good control here. Same for crime.

Again, the post is an advisory/alert from the US Embassy to US Citizens. Not an open invitation for everyone to dissect the meaning of it.

Please define what you mean by that.

Same for crime.
You are saying crime is not a problem in the 🇩🇴❓
It seems to be in the mind of the 🇩🇴 electorate.
Ranking as a top issue.

It's likely a garbage alert and notice how they tie in Haitians getting deported (which has nothing to do with anything) as though the DR doesn't have the right to enforce their own laws.

The alert is about US citizens traveling to the DR, NOT about Haitians being deported, which a US embassy really has no reason talking about.

The tie to Haitians is made by some Dominican immigration officials (NOT by the US Embassy) who apparently are too dense to realize that not everyone with darker skin is an illegal Haitian migrant that needs be immediately detained and questioned. Some just happen to be US citizens with dark skin.

I have personally been singled out by DR immigration officials at airports and questioned before flying back to Canada, twice in the past 4 years, with my canadian passport scanned with a laser for forgery, because Dumbinican migración officials apparently assumed there was no such thing as a dark-skin Canadian citizen.

Try and read this alert again.

Reports of disparate treatment of U.S. citizens by Dominican authorities are a matter of ongoing concern to the U.S. Embassy.

It might be helpful to American citizens if the embassy would offer some actual details of this "disparate" treatment. What do they consider "disparate" treatment? Where has it happened? Has any law abiding U.S. citizen actually been detained in a crowded, inhumane detention center? Not being facetious here; I think it's important to know.

Aside from that, why does the embassy group illegal Haitians with U.S. citizens? The end of the second paragraph nearly suggests that Americans are being sent to Haiti.

Maybe you should contact the US Embassy and pose your questions to them?
