The United States Embassy issued a notice on 21 March 2025 indicating the temporary suspension of passport and notary services at the Punta Cana Consular Agency in the province of La Altagracia. The office was opened to serve the millions of US tourists who travel to Punta Cana resorts every year. The reason for the suspension is not given.

In the notice, the US Embassy says that interested customers can make appointments for these services at the US Embassy in Santo Domingo or the Puerto Plata Consular Agency via the US Embassy website.

The Embassy will issue advance notice if limited appointments become available at the Punta Cana Consular Agency.

The Embassy explains that all emergency appointments, including requests for an emergency passport, are being handled at the US Embassy in Santo Domingo.

Interesting, makes one wonder if the issuance of a certain emergency passport last week has anything to do with it.

Unlikely.
That would have been authorized/ handled by the US Embassy down in the Capital. This closure is more than likely due to an audit or investigation taking place.

It was NOT issued in Punta Cana. It was from the ever problematic US Embassy in SD............

Thanks, in the notice further down it has "All emergency appointments are held at the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo"

The Consulate is suspending passport and notary services, not closing. However, this action may be a signal the Department of State is downsizing operations resulting from budget cutbacks.

Meaning,if you're an American citizen and never want to have a a relationship concerning your health, welfare or being, you can stick your head in the sand and live stress free laying on one of beautiful beaches..
You can also avoid a traffic jam if you have so many other important things to get done in the northern tier. Time is money. So " avoid at all costs" if that fits your lifestyle.

Good to know, will avoid unless it can't be avoided.
