Back on topic. This isn't about going into a restaurant or a bank. It was a meeting with the President of the Dominican Republic. President Abinader is the representative of the Dominican people, and a chance to meet with him should be treated with respect.

You show respect to the office, especially if you're a visitor there. Vin Diesel has assistants, I'm sure, who could have asked what the dress code was. Even if he didn't, it's a function of common sense.

The only thing that might have made sense was if the President did a surprise visit while Mr. Diesel was on set filming. Otherwise, grab some trousers, long sleeves, and a light jacket unless specifically told otherwise.

It's probably no surprise to most that I'm not a fan of Former President Trump. But if I was invited to meet with him, and accepted, I'd dress appropriately, and would expect any and all other visitors to do the same. That should apply to all heads of all other countries, including the DR.

Respect. It's that simple. Holding oneself to a higher standard.

No one would disagree, it s not about Dominican Culture like some experts keep on saying. You meet with a President, any president, or even an official, you would think it warrants a suit.

Again, it s a celebrity, he lives on another planet, they held to different standards, blame it on celebrity worshipping culture.

Actually, not just government offices. I remember stopping at Tipico Bonao for lunch on our way to Mao one time. Mr AE had on a shirt like Vin Diesel. A horrified waiter ran out and intercepted us in the parking lot 😱. We had a suitcase with more appropriate attire, so he changed.
Expats may be a bit more pragmatic than Dominicans who have never known any other climate.
The ex-pats I know here from South Florida, which has a similar climate but with air conditioning, all live in shorts, short sleeve shirts, and sandals.
The idea of long pants, socks, and shoes is intolerable here in the warm months.

Cannot count the number of times I have heard people say "you will get used to the heat".
All I did was get used to sweating.
Only took the wife a few years living in the US before she fell in love with AC.
It is hilarious when she is back in the D.R. and it's "oh my god, it is so hot here".

Only an out and out dummy would meet the president of a country in a sleeveless shirt no matter how hot the day.
Or possibly Vin is one of those who inhabits his own world and never gives a thought about anyone else.
Be fun to ask Mrs. Diesel about that one,

Oh, I agree, however you are assuming Vin Diesel was the one wanting to meet with the President.

It could have been the other way around, for all I know.

And the conversation could have gone something like this :

President's assistant : I think Mr Diesel needs to change into something more formal.

Vin's assistant : I will tell him, don't hold your breath though.

-----------

Vin's assistant : president's guys think you need something more formal to wear.

Vin : nope. This whole thing bores me anyway. Don't they like free PR.
Remind which one is the president anyway ?

Vin's assistant : the one in the blue shirt.

Vin : tell the lads we heading back to the yacht, I heard puerto rico has bad beer, empanadas and cheap girls, as well !!!

President's assistant : after some reflexion, tank top and flip-flops are OK. Thank you.

A suit, omg!
We disagree on what makes one a celebrity.

I have summer suits for work, pencil skirt and jacket with short sleeves .The funny thing is that I brought 1 here and I am sure I will never wear it unless Abinader himself invites me as well:cool:

Regarding celebrity...Vin Diesel is a celebrity, although I am not even sure I would recognize him in the street, but I am pretty sure his name and his face is more recognizable than Abinader will ever be.

The only experts are those who were born into, or have participated within Dominican culture for more than 20 minutes.
Yes, I could care less what a person who lives within a seaside, retirement community of expatriate stale farts decides to wear when they eat breakfast, lunch or dinner (and melba toast in between), but SOME of you have to understand that there are rules for when you enter governmental buildings on business. Crocs, sleeveless tees, and those damn dirty shorts that have not been washed in 3 weeks, do not cut it.
Oh by the way, some need to start wearing underwear again as well. :sneaky::sneaky::sneaky:
