It seems like the apps work better then the old fashioned hardware. Magic jack and vonage work better on my smart phone then with the modem.

this is the problem: the upload speed. if you have any music download app or program installed on your pc or cell phone then what happens is that when your cell phone is on or the laptop is turned on, it begins to upload files automatically, thus eating up the limited upload speed you have, this will cause your voice sound choppy to the other person. in any case, both your upload speed and download speed are at borderline line. I thought no one gets this slow plan anymore as its worth almost nothing for anything usable these days. I am also sure you have other people or devices connected to this wifi router. if anyone is using the net for anything or has the music / movie download program installed then you will get bad call quality. I have a 45mb download and 5 mb upload speeds. you can pretty much do anything in my wifi and I will still get great call quality.
My calls are all to and from USA so I only use google voice. its all free and I have been using it as my american line for as few years now, all free.
I use a linksys pap2 voip internet phone adapter which is configured to a free voip account with free american DID number: callcentric. so now I get free incoming calls to a hardline at home as well. I simply use my google voice number to make and receive calls. I use groove ip to receive and make calls via cell phone, using google voice. I have not paid a cent for many years to call usa. why get vonage and magicjack when google voice gives you all for free?

Problem solved......switched to MagicJack. I suspect the problem with Vonage was the Vonage device. Tech people at Vonage said the problem was with my phone, now using same phone and lousy internet connection and all is well, even had my old number ported in to MJ.
I will keep my fingers crossed just the same.
Thanks for info, comments and advice.

I know someone in the DR that uses Ooma and they like it, but most systems require special plans to call DR telephones.

I use an international Vonage plan that includes monthly minutes to DR cell phones while land line calls are not limited.
Guys I own two OOMA's an older one NO FEES AT ALL -100% Free & a newer one I bought second hand 2 months ago, that one I pay about $ 4.30 US per month for supposed taxes. In any event that Phone allows calls out or in from anywhere in the world where you can use the Ethernet cable to the back of the home's router. The calls are clear. You can use you local area code & in many cases you get some choice in available phone numbers. Mine is working today in Cabarete, an the other I have is back home in the NY.

Ooma is the best. Still have two pre tax oomas and one post tax. All three work great. The one in the DR even works with ridiculously slow internet.

How is OOMA making money offering free calls?

Does that include free calls to DR Cell phones?

An obihai works about as well as an Ooma. It's $40 and you use your free Google Voice account to make calls.

I have Ooma but I don't make enough calls to activate it but when the time comes I will start using it.

Does anybody else use Google Hangout? Because it had been working fine for me.

I have MagicJack with 2 years left on a five year renewal at an outrageous discount. I'm happy with the service. It works on my PC with my original device and on a smart phone with a free app and my subscription service.

I concur. Have been using MJ in the DR and elsewhere in the World with absolutely no problems whatsoever for 6 years now.

Me too, did the year to year renewal until last year when they made me an offer I couldn't refuse for 5 years. Works great.

Windeguy ...no ... calls to & from US , maybe Canada & PR ( as I never tried those numbers) and I will say OOMA makes money with multitudes of add on services plus discounted International calling plans
