Listin Diario reports on that the DR joined the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) in 2010. The Parlacen is the regional and permanent organ of political and democratic representation of the System of Central American Integration (SICA) with the fundamental objective of realizing the integration of the Central American countries. In recent years, the DR has distanced itself from its participation in SICA, moving to be active with Costa Rica and Panama, and more recently, Ecuador, in the Alliance for Development in Democracy movement.
Nevertheless, the Dominican Republic pays for 20 deputies and 20 replacements making at least RD$247,000 a month. The duties of the regional legislators are questionable but the pay is considerable RD$189 million a year. The Parlacen deputies also benefit from two vehicle unlimited tax exonerations during their term.
