A study by Corporaci?n Latinobar?metro, Santiago de Chile shows that the Dominican Republic came in first place in answering the following question:

"ACUERDO CON QUE LOS MILITARES HAYAN EXPULSADO AL PRESIDENTE ZELAYA DE
HONDURAS"
trans "In agreement that the military sent off President Zelaya of Honduras"

Top five LA countries in the affirmative

Dominican Republic 44%
Guatemala 34%
Honduras 34%
Venezuela 32%
El Salvador 32%

Although the study and others indicate that the majority of people from LA and Honduras itself rejected the coup, those numbers from the DR should be a concern for Mr Leonel. Perhaps that is why he has been so vocal about the coup and seems to be immersing himself in being a diplomat of sorts, as he is scheduled to meet with Zelaya and newly elected pretend president Lobo. A solution in the horizon????

There's nothing pretend about Lobo- he is the president elect. It seems that Dominicans recognize that Zelaya was breaking the Honduran constitution. Leonel can meet with both of them, if Zelaya can manage to escape Honduras without going to prison. LEONEL is far craftier than Zelaya.

No kidding. Pretend indeed. Lefties are sinverg?enza and are still mourning Zelaya's power grab attempt that slipped away. That by the way was the real coup attempt in all this.

They're still calling the removal of Zelaya from power a coup. Give it a rest. Honduras has stared down the well fed well dressed left leaning OAS and UN busybodies and brushed aside the rumblings of the US administration.

Maybe Zelaya can open a shop selling cowboy hats and boots.

Leonel is doing a nice toe dance to make hay from all this; pretty good for a kid from Villa Juana.

what a bunch of crap. zelayas politics might have been questionable, but a coup is a coup, and should not be tolerated in the 21st century. the honduran political system is even more oligarchic than the dominican, and the government at least as corrupt. people where killed, and human rights violeted, this is not just about removing zelaya from power. naming the obvious is not leftist, its just being honest.
but of course there is no sense in trying to explain that to somebdy who is still using cold war labels like left and right. this is 2009, and besides pittyfull cuba, the united states are the only country in the world, where people will believe you, when you tell them socialism still exists.

You choose to believe what you want based on your own beliefs. I'm no different, if Chavez or Castro are for it I'm against it. Leonel as per usual is trying to straddle a fence- stay on the good side of the Americans, while pretending to be a socialist for Chavez, Castro and like. Spain has a socialist government, as does Chile....etc. Latin American Socialism is hard to define because it seems , it requires more force to enforce, more trickery to stay in power...etc. Good Old Brazil with it's 14,000 killed by police last year, and Venezuela with it 12,000 murders are fine examples to follow. lOBO good or bad was fairly elected by Hondurans despite the fear induced by Zelayists and the resistance for people not to vote. It wasn't the defacto government throwing bombs around.

The Western press has all but acquiesed that what happened in Honduras was legal. After all, if the Congress of a country has no authority then what you have is despotism.

I think this meeting with Leonel is just window dressing, as Zelaya won't be getting anything out of it, probably not even amnesty. It will be intersting to see what Leonel tries to push, seeing that he se metio la pata in being so vocal about the dizque golpe de estado.

Will this meeting even happen?
Zelaya a?n no confirma si viajar? a RD :: CLAVE digital m?vil

I guess it all depends on what terms Zelaya is allowed to travel. If safe conduct isn't granted I would think the likelihood of Zelaya accepting Micheletti's insistence that travel is under asylum terms isn't very high. Earlier in the week there were announcements in relation to travel to Mexico, but it didn't happen. Then there were earlier announcements that Zelaya was coming here yesterday - that didn't happen either.

I know President Fernandez announced this meeting
La Rep?blica - Leonel Fern?ndez reunir? a Zelaya y a Lobo

but..........let's wait and see.

I am sure that 44% of the population here has NO opinion whatsoever on the coup in Honduras, does not know where Honduras is... and could care less.

More like 44% of Dominicans think that NY takes up MOST of the USA.

Hey Elizabeth do you have some inside empirical info on how the survey was conducted in the DR? Otherwise it seems to me to be a personal opinion.

it was just a personal opinion...

we are still allowed to have personal opinions, right?

Just from what I know about poll taking..... and what I know about the grasp of greater geography... Sure, you might have said 44% of the university educated Dominicans in SD or Santiago..

But you go ahead and try this one for yourself tomorrow when you are out and about... ask all the Dominicans that you meet about the coup in Honduras and ask them where Honduras is and what is the name of the president...

See if you can rack up 44%

You'd be hard pressed to rack up 44% who know where Honduras is in most countries, actually.

? Hahaha! Who spiked the punch? The removal of an elected president from power is a coup de etat. "Zelaya's power grab" Man! Ha! There was no power grab, there was an attempt to change the Constitution of Honduras to promote more land reforms and plebian rights. And the ruling elite of this "banana republic"-definition true to form doesnt want to change the status quo, but who does when it means you ll be on the losing end.
Honduras hasnt stared down anything to date. Apparently Brazil has a much political weight as the United States in this hemisphere. Which is incredibly odd because you would think the US would be in support of diplomatic resolution(at least on paper). Gunboat diplomacy has returned and we all have a front seat.

What drugs are you smoking. Zelaya was attempting a constitution assembly so he could stay in power; he said as much several times before June 28th. He thought that with Chavez's money behind him that he was untouchable. Was he going to give some of his land away? The only gunboat diplomacy was from Inzula, Lula, and bunch. Was the ruling class worried, of course they were, so were thousands of other Hondurans that didn't want be become like their neighbors, the Nicaraguans. Leonel is just trying to get the sock and jean manufacturers to come back to the DR.
