I worry about other people. Get real mister. I'm just tired of hearing about this dress up dress down issue. Let people live.

Get real? If you are tired of it you probably shouldnt be reading about it. I would ignore the whole thread if I felt as you do! hahaha

Listen, my husband and I travel a great deal to Europe and there is no way I'm traveling to France, where we go must of the time to visit his parents, in high heels and a suit. I always do so in nice jeans and a silk blouse. I've never had any problems. I think is a matter of class. People are not stupid, they size you up and they know right away, who has it or who doesn't.

I agree that one is sized up. I like to scream tourist when I travel internationally. I don't worry much about class, but I'm not oblivious either, my experience is affected by what I wear.

by attacking someone whose post you didn't even understand;) let me explain it to you: forbeca is talking about behaviour, if you go back and read her post, she said she travels in jeans/blouse, (that's informal to her) in other words: it doesn't matter what you're wearing, but it does matter how you conduct yourself. And I agree with her 100%

I certainly didn't ask nor need "your" explanations of what others say. I will be sure to ask when I feel the need.

Talking about comprehension, I didn't attack anyone. "Get real" were her words which I just repeated. Now go back to your room.

Can you people stop your childish chit chat, you sound ridiculous.

If you have nothing to add to the original question, be quite. Better still, go stand in the corner...

there are people who abide with dress codes and people who don't.
there are people who agree with dress codes and people who don't.
there are people who believe in dress codes and people who don't.
i'm not sure which group i belong to, and i don't really care what other people think about my dress code.......
.....but, one of the british ambassadors we had here was a scot. thompson was his name, nice enough bloke, but not much of a diplomat.
he took to wearing formal tartan on special occasions in the dominican republic. kilt, sporran and all. that is perfectly okay in cultures that understand where he comes from, but how i used to cringe when a dominican used to ask me why my ambassador wears a skirt.

how you dress speaks volumes

Someone mentioned maids before. For a period of time a few years ago my mother had a maid come into her house once a week to clean (in the USA). The maid was from Ecuador and spoke little English. She would arrive dressed very smartly, nice buisness suit and nice shoes etc. She always looked impeccible. Then she would go into our guest room and change into sweat pants or old shorts and clean. She did a fantastic job and appeared to take pride in doing things thoroughly and properly. When she was finished she would change back into her very nice clothes and leave. I had a tremendous amount of respect for her. She dressed and carried herself better than 95% of the people I know. She did everything with dignity and class. If she had not taken so much pride in her appearance I probably would have barely noticed her.

Bobinche - You have summed up the answer to the original question! Don't know if your story is true, but what an analogy.

A very sad state of affairs

Well all I can say on this one is that if the DR wants my custom (albeit as a tourist) then it needs to learn that freedom of expression is one of the expectations of the holidaymaker.

I spend 11? months of the year wearing a suit, shirt and tie .. I don't believe I am being disrespectful by wearing shorts 24/14 whilst on holiday ... and if the DR believes that not to be good enough ... then I will simply holiday elsewhere

Don't let the door hit your low class, narrow-minded, arrogant ass on the way out.
Some people still appreciate style, sophistication, education and manners. Apparently you don't!

I have to agree with Tony. Not to say that I havent worn shorts in the DR before...My first few trips I didnt know any better and wore them all the time. You get treated with much more respect if you dress properly. If you cant accept that then I suggest you vacation somewhere else.

Now that is Rich, Low Class, ... I prefer Middle, thank you, ... Narrow Minded ...Says He who is trying to dictate how people should spend their holiday time, Arogant ... Your not American are you Tony by any chance, Ass ... I have a Rabbit, Hamster, Goldfish and a Canary ... but a beast of burden I do not ... and I would not take it with me when going out in the evening

How very true, some people indeed do appreciate style, sophistication, education and manners and when somebody can point out to me what is stylish about sitting sweating all evening, where the sophistication is covering your body when the climate does not deem it logical to do so, Education ... what on earth has education got to do with this ... I would be interested to know as that is what I do for a living ... and manners ... this coming from a person who has just verbally assasinated me over conflicting opinions .... hmmm nice manners

I came across similar views to those in the DR when I was last in Barbados, however in the windward isles they make a provision for all wants.

So nice to know that facism is alive and well in the DR.

choices, choices

As I see it you have three options:

1) Dress for comfort. Shorts, t-shirt, casual shoes. I do this when I don't really need anything from my environment or if they will accept my dressing down anyway (i.e. on flights, casual friday, on the beach).

2) Dress like the rest. You will blend in and people treat you more or less like one of them. I do this when I don't want to stand out or offend somebody. (i.e. when going into town to buy stuff or see sights (home or away), when meeting new people where you might not be sure of their habits/reaction (i.e. on holidays) or when I just don't want to be hassled.

3) Dress to impress. Latest Armani suit, Gucci shoes and accesories, etc. I do this when I need something from my environment, when I want to be noticed or to impress people with my apprearance. For business meetings, for official occasions, for ceremonies, when going out.

Most importantly, I mix and match according to the occasion and the reason I'm there (i.e. as a best man at the wedding I would take care not to look better than the groom, as the groom I would make sure to outshine everyone). Also, even when wearing casual clothing, it will be in the latest fashion, well cut and clean.

Just my two cents :classic:, but to each his/her own..

In my humble opinion, people using this kind of language deserve to be thrown out of the DR1 Forums...

As a "Tourist" you can wear whatever you want!

You won't be allowed to enter churches, women included! Please wear shorts, tank tops, and "silly" hats! That way we will know who to charge "Double"or "Tripple" wherever you go!!!

All the "Name Calling" about such a "Non-Issue" is a bit far fetched!

When I used to live in Costa Rica, in the central valley, Escazu to be exact, I always used to wear jeans and sneakers. But the weather there is much cooler than here. 75 degrees year round. It's the same temp in dec as in july and aug.

It gets hot here. So I wear what I want. I have never not been allowed in any place I've gone to in the DR.

At work we all wear whatever we please. Customers can't see you through the phone line and when you are working 14 hour days you might as well be comfortable.
