Nothing but Barcelo Trina. Grreat tastebuds think alike! Brugal gives me heartburn its so bitter.
Chris, I like you more and more all the time! I think I went through a Bermudez spurt because I stayed with Livi Bermudez (of the Rum family) in Sosua, thought it only right to try it. But Barcelo is definitely superior.

Brugal

jmaz98 said:
What's wrong with Brugal rum?

Brugal is the rot-gut of the Dominican rhums.
The reason it's so popular is that almost all the Dominicans drink it and there is some logic behind their reasoning.
This is how it goes. It's more powerful, cheaper and gives you a bigger headache than Barcelo or Bermudez, so it must be better.
It's the more bang for your buck theory.
Marco.

What do I hate?

1- Quisqueya beer
2- Some motoconcho who have noisy moto
3- The security guys from some Hotels AI who are located at the main doors, who does not have not education.

4- The kind of way that some Dominicans think about hair cuts, earing, tatoo, etc.

5- Some Dominican woman hiding their bodies at the beach wearing short pants to swing and putting plastic hat in the head at the beach.

6- Some of my Dominican, when the go to AI for a weekend they let know every body who they are at the buffet.......

7- About food, I hate to see the head of pork hanging in the street table
I mean people selling the meat at the street,

My goodness, I hate those stuff but I miss it a bit!

I forgot about the 'meat-on-the-street' - with a few mangy dogs licking up the scraps. That takes some getting used to.

I guess for all of us it is a love-hate relationship - the things we love to hate.

One more thought on Stupid Motoconcho guys. Park my car and going into Casino and the dope says "Concho?". These people are so dumb I don't understand how ever the fatties fall for them. Do they have "Stupid Cells" in Fat for Christs sake? I just don't understand for the life of me.

Yesterday I went to the airport to pick up my 12 year old daughter who flew by herself. It cost me 100 pesos to get into the baggage area to grab her up and then the SOB asked me for more money after I left.

I have to tell you that these guys are way out of control and this government and its people permit this crap which is totally amazing.

With all our bitching about Hippo I have to say this about the situation. Please try to understand my view before you explode.

He has made this country so UNSTABLE with his outright thievery, corruption and graft that Real Estate values have flown in value as a safe haven for money and I am making a lot of it. I almost hope he DOES get re-elected. Where else can the smart money go except into real estate which is the only thing he can't make disappear! God bless Hippo and the intelligent Dominicans that vote his dumb *** in! I only wish I had more money invested here before people realized the wholesale raping of the country was going on. They just kicked up the prices in the gated community I have been buying property in and the stuff is selling like hotcakes. One lot I bought 1 year ago for 15k is now selling (by the meter for) $43,500. Another I bought for 19k is selling for $55,620. This isn't a wish because there are lots that arent as nice without the quality of the views that sell for these prices.

God bless this country and the people that run it...

-Absolutely hate the government bureacracy. The fact that you have go to ten different places on several different days to get the simplest of documents, just gets me really ticked off.
-Hate the attitude of complacency of people towards the problems they face. There's no power "Oh well...it will come back on eventually"...No water "Oh well, we'll get some eventually...".
-Hate people asking me for money. I'm not talking about people begging on the street (Those I can put up with). I'm talking about people who barely know you or who are your "friends" and as soon as you get down there they show up and want to "have a talk" with you before you go back to the US, which of course always involves the fact that they have some problem that they need money to solve and could you help them out?
-The police and the way they behave. Just a bunch of uneducated thugs. You're at a bar they just barge in and make the DJ turn all the lights on, for no reason.
-People always wanting to "watch" your car if you go to any even slightly touristy destination. Of course you always have to oblige, since you don't now if your car will be all keyed up when you come out.
-People driving at night with their high beams on all the time. At least my Jeepeta has some powerful beams too, so when I see them coming I give them a change of lights a couple of times, if they don't change to low beam then I blind the heck out of them. It's stil very annoying having to do this all the time.

However, there are so many things I love about my country that I wouldn't consider retiring to anywhere else in the world.

If you can't beat em,join em!

About the "High Beams" all the time,I HAVE the response! I mounted 2 high beam spot lights on the "Defensa" of my Ford Van. Then I mounted 4 quartz-halogen "Spots" on the roof! They are controlled with 2 switches. At night I run with the "High" beams of the van, plus the two high beam spot lights! The Dominicans actually have the balls to "flash" their lights at ME! They are on "High",but don't like it when others do the same! Well, when they flash at me,I add the 4 quartz-halogen to my "mix"! I told the guy at "Musicaro" that I wanted to "Fry the cornea of anyone who looks at my lights"! I have focused the lights to aim directly into the oncoming cars wind screen! It is one of life's little pleasures to see them flashing their lights like crazy when I hit all my "Lazers"!!!!!!
You want to tell me that they may run into me because they can't see? Again,"Good",that is why the front of my van resembles an "Autobus" running from Monticristi to Santiago!! "Viva La Defensa"!!!!!!!!!!!! :cross-eye :knockedou :knockedou  :dead: :p

Is this thread chock full of Contradictions or am I not getting something?

I keep reading alot about what people hate about the DR ( which usually are things that happen because people are FREE in the DR) and then I read many times from the same poster that he/she likes the FREEDOM of the DR. Am I not getting something here?

Do you like or Hate the FREEDOM that prevails in the DR? Which one is it?

You hate that most drivers always have their headlights on High beam because they are free to do so, but you like the fact that you can drive as fast as you want?

You hate that many dominicans hike prices because they know and are free to assume that you will have (and probably do) more money right there and then than most people on the streets, but you like it that for $15 you can get a maid and maybe even a butler and a gardener to keep your house very clean?

You hate the prejudices that dominicans have about different people in different classes or from different countries but you like to constantly judge dominicans for doing the samething you are doing, which is pre- judging them?

Which one is it? Do you like it or hate it? Or are most people simply confused about whether the level of freedom people have in the DR is healthy?

With great freedom, comes great responsibility.

I do not believe that responsible behavior can be enforced upon free people, or the people are in reality no longer free. Responsibility must come from inside. And all too many Dominicans simply do not behave responsibly.

I'll take freedom over enforced civility everytime. That doesn't mean I am conflicted about the issue. The freedom, for me, trumps all.

Tom aka XR I just finished my income tax forms. Who says you can't get wounded by a blank?

1. The assumption that as a tourist I am there to get laid.
2. The assumpation that as a tourist I have lots of money, and therefore am there to get laid
3. Panty-handling, perfume thieving customs "officials"
4. The assumption that I cannot understand a word that is being said because I am a blonde tourist, there to get laid, and therefore wd not understand Spanish
5. Garbage never cleaned up on beach areas where Dominicans go
6. Horn-honking for no reason

But I LOVE DR because
1. If you want to you can easily get laid
2. There are cabanas so that the AI police can't getcha
3. People, for the most part, are great
4. The smell of the cane fields burning as you drive from the airport - a reminder of where you are and the place that makes you happy (even without getting laid)
5. Being able to understand what is being said to me even though they think I can't
6. No oppresive drinking laws
7. Chicharon from a street vendor and an icy cold Presidente

This is something I HATE too, but definitely something I am working to fix for my next trip to the DR. Some of the locals (not everyone because some are the total opposite and go overboard to be helpful and friendly) assume that if you are white, you can't speak Spanish and therefore don't understand them when they try and con you right to your face or say bad things. I vow that I will be fluent in Spanish for my next visit - I have longed to see the look on someone's face after they talk about you for half an hour and then you break out the Spanish!!! Can't wait.

the thing is that i am fluent in spanish. i'm puerto rican and it is hysterical to get reactions from them when you starting speaking back to them in spanish.
