I would say the average IQ for Dominicans currently living in the DR, regardless of education, nutrition and/or health social class is 101.

You all fail to notice that Dominicans possess a high level of common sense, which is probably the best tool humans have available when it comes to reasoning (and many fail to use). You don't need to tell a Dominican that if you warm up food in a microwave, it will come out hot...

Obviously, race is not a factor... ancient Egyptians and Hindus had black genes in their DNA pool, and yet they were able to build extraordinary pyramids, formulate complex mathematical and astronomical calculations and rich, advanced cultures that modern science is yet not able to fully understand. Mayans, Incans and Aztec are another example of great achievement by "minor" races.

Intelligence is related to genetics, nutrition/health, social background, one's personal desire of achievement and a little bit of luck.

If you are the child of poor, ignorant parents, with 3 square meals every 5 days, who thinks that's the way life is and nothing is going to change that, chances are you are going to be one stupid sumbitch.

Dominicans are average: many strive to just get money, without obtaining an education; others want to get educated, even if they don't possess the resources to do so. Just open your eyes and look for both groups.

Comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The average IQ of dominicans isn't 101, it's a tad over 80,which is pretty much average for third world nations.

Sancocho Joe's article raises some very important questions. The most important of them been "exactly what is intelligence?".

I have a friend that, although I would otherwise consider him highly intelligent, he seems to have a problem communicating in writing. His ideas are actually coherent, but he can't seem to put words or letters in the right order. I would venture to say that he has some kind of dyslexia. Is he not smart?

How about me? There are some aspects of knowledge in which I am totally useless. I have no sense of direction, I get lost even going home trough the same route I always follow. I have very poor coordination. I am easily distracted, which leads to very poor short-term memory. Despite all ths I scored OK in standard I.Q. tests, but if you spent one day with me you'd go surprised I have not been committed yet, for my own good.

The point is... there are different types of intelligence. If intelligence was a sign of sucess wouldn't Marilyn Von Savant be more successful than Bill Gates? Perhaps she is. Which leads to the next question. How do you measure success?

Again, where did yo find this? Not Dr. Lynn again, Pls. give us your source for this number.

I think that is one of the problems,

Some people mix intelligence with Success or the other way around. They are two different things. Some people mix Monetary success with social success or personal acheivement.

you cant bundle them into one IQ Exam to get this number that determines how intelligent you are.

Just because you are good at math will not guarantee riches.
Just because you can read a book like "War and Peace" by Tolstoy does not mean you can read and understand a Scientific or Medical Journal.

Just because someone robs a bank or throws trash on the ground, or they cannot save money does not mean they have a low IQ. Thats rediculous.

How do you define someone who could be the richest person in the world but yet he is an alcholic and beats his wife,

or someone who can split an atom but yet, rapes children

or someone who could write a #1 best selling book but cannot do basic Algebra.

or someone who can ace and SAT exam or have a 4.0 GPA yet when they are in a working envirnoment they cannot deal with failure or cannot work with people.

Since I am in education, let me say

1) PIB is brilliant.
2) Sancocho is too.

Now, the original question is dumber than dumb!

Average? How on earth could you possibly measure that on a scientific basis?

Put it this way. There are Dominican professors in many universities in the US including MIT. There are many gifted Dominican students studying in the best prep schools and universities in the US. There are a large number of outstanding professional people from the DR that are practicing their professions all over the world, quite successfully. Of course, these are generally from homes that eat three times or more a day and have sufficient income to send them to these schools.. So what is their average IQ? I have a friend that is off the scale and that person is from Barahona for God's sake!! One of the richest kids in the DR doesn't have 52 cards in his deck but he still graduated from Penn....Another I know did Peddie, Princeton and Wharton....

I guess Americans are stupid since they haven't won the National Spelling Bee in, like, 5 or 6 years??? Seems it is always an Oriental child. Hummmm. Or the National Geography Bee?? Or the Westinghouse Science Prize??? So now, white "Americans" have a lower average IQ?? This is a very stupid argument....

Just look at what happened over the weekend---JPL and Mars!!

Come on, think of something else to rant about...

I just saw this thread and didn't bother reading any of the responses. I have no idea why you would ask this question. Actually , it is a pretty stupid one. IQ is not a true measure of intelligence. A man who has never set foot in a school may be brilliant but score very low on a standard IQ test. At the same time, a person with "slower" learning ability can be "trained" to recognize patterns and number sequences and can score relatively high on an IQ test despite the fact that he may have difficulty solving life's everyday problems.

Argh!

My ex-wife spent 3 years getting her Masters in Counseling and spent more than half her time buggering me with this testing nonsense so I became, through osmosis, an expert.

PLEASE people you are confusing several issues here. An IQ test, properly designed (and there's the hitch) does measure an individual's ability to learn and absorb infomation. It can be done. That having been said there are 100 quacks to every so-called professional out there that use (some knowingly and some just out of ignorance) tests that are culturally biased or even purposefully skewed.

This is a stupid question.

But having been to school, learned a language, good at math, shape recognition yada-yada-yada doesn't mean a hill of beans if the test is properly designed. And tests like this do exist. An IQ test is not a skills test or an achievement test, but instead is a measure of someone's ultimate capacity to learn and as such the amount of time spent in school learning things is completely irrelevant.

The original question might more appropriately be 'what is the educational level' of Dominicans, not IQ level. Because I do not believe Dominicans are inherently any smarter or stupider than any other population on the planet. But education-wise (read skills/achievement) there may be a point to be made.

OK, now I scrolled through the whole thread and having done so, want to expand on my above post. IQ, has nothing to do with race. The reason why some countries populations mean IQ is higher than others is due to education. The inhabitants of those countries had better schooling and as a result, are better equipped to sit down with a pencil and paper and recognize the patterns and sequences that are necessary to score high on an IQ test. A man may live in a dirt poor country in Africa, be a genius, and score very low on an IQ test because he cannot recognize what number comes next in the following sequence of numbers : 3....9....27....81.....? but at the same time he might be the leader of his clan or what have you because of his incredible wisdom and ability to solve lifes problems.

IQ is NOT a measure of intelligence.

Also, Pib made some GREAT points.
