If you find yourself in the situation of having run over a person on the road and that person dies, report the incident immediately to the authorities. A good lawyer could get you off with even less than three years in jail. Diario Libre features a story on 19 June 2024 with what to do if you run over a person, the legal repercussions and steps to take.

According to Dominican Law 63-17 on Mobility, Land Traffic, and Road Safety, any driver involved in a hit-and-run accident is both criminally and civilly liable for the incident. The law mandates specific actions for drivers involved in such incidents and outlines the penalties for causing injuries or fatalities.

Diario Libre tells what to do right after the accident, but also explains that the driver may also face civil lawsuits from the injured party or their family. The newspaper stresses that the failure to comply with the obligations could only result in more severe judicial charges, especially in the case of hit-and-run...

The problem with staying at the scene of an accident is that you may face immediate consequences from people at the scene. I remember hearing of a case where a truck driver hit a child, then abandoned the truck and fled on foot to the nearest police station in fear of roadside "justice".

I'm all for road safety and strict control and respective penalties, but I don't see anywhere on the news article on DR1 nor in Diario Libre or the other source references to cases where the driver is in fact not at fault. Unless I'm missing something, just the article written by DR1 says " run over a person on the road". Pedestrians have no business being "on the road" unless on the crosswalk etc. So saying that any driver that causes a death of someone walking "on the road" could face up to 3 years in jail is just garbage in my opinion. I hope the right sources detail this a bit more precisely.

I once stopped for a body of a motorist that was run over earlier by somebody. I almost got lynched by his friends and family while still waiting for the police.
This was the "stupid and naiv" version of me 18 years ago. You do whatever you need to do. Should i ever run over anybody without whitnesses. I takie of !
If there are whitnesses, i take off and call the police and ask a friend of mine to call the police as well, just in case the police "forgets" about my call.

If its your Fault , I say you stay and face the consequences.. as per those instructions.

IF you are a Gringo, and its 100% not your Fault . I would not follow those Directions, if you have any sense of self preservation.
So you are recommending being a fugative of the law 🤷‍♂️

Regardless of fault, if you strike a pedestrian with your vehicle and you flee, in any country on Earth, whether a globe or flat, that is called leaving the scene of an accident. Many cases add on failure to report an accident.

Not recommending anything to anyone .. but speaking for myself .
We as gringos do not have a chance ...its been proven over and over, nothing will change .
And if they murder you there will be no justice for you either, so why lay down.

sorry, i re read my post, and u are correct, it was not clear.
I have no intentions of advising other people to break the law.

This is a difficult topic, but in my opinion, the problem is that the authorities themselves are sometimes fugitives of the law, as in, they don't abide by it... But as said, this is a huge moral dilemma... You must obviously call for help, but to be completely honest, regardless if I had anything to do with an accident or not, I would be terrified of waiting for the authorities.... Not so in my country...

20 years ago a guy i knew hit a car and killed 2 people with the third seriousely injured.
He was drunk and fell asleep at the wheel.

The families of the victims were politically connected.
A tradegy devestating to the families.

He went to Luperon with cash and arranged travel that night to Haiti. After that to his home country.

He was looking at spending the rest of his life in a Dominican jail , although maybe he would have been "terminated" before that.

Terrible story. Only lesson.... dont drink and drive.
