I'm not going to ship my car. It is impractical,
My next best alternative is to buy one in DR.

I know they are more expensive..

Where would be the best place to start looking.?

Thank you

what do you like to drive?
Automatic of course.. AFter tha I just want a safe reliable vehicle to get me from point A to B.
I have heard they are expensive but have no numbers in front of me. I also know that driving in the DR is not relaxing but then either is driving in NY or GA

If you're saying buy new, then it really depends on what car maker you like/trust. Most of the new dealers are on Kennedy in Santo Domingo. There are also in most places on the island. Generally new cars are cheaper in Santo Domingo, used cars are cheaper/in better condition in Santiago. If it's used there are used car dealers all over also. The best place to start looking is online since most of the dealers have websites or are on sites like Father Guido suggested or Facebook, Corotos etc.. If you want extra help let us know what make/model/year you're looking for and someone can point you in a more specific direction.

Plan on at least $20K if you want one less than 150K miles with working AC and doesn't need to go to the mechanic the first 6 months

I'd buy any one of these. Especially the B13. That thing is like new condition.

Yes the old Nissans are tanks, except for the fuel pumps. But how do you know those cars are in excellent condition and don't need a lot of work ?
but you lost me with a Lumina -it's hard to even get parts for those anymore

Call Mike Logan... In a SEARCH of DR1 you should be able to find posts with, for, about him or perhaps someone here will have his contact..
He's helped a few people I know find reliable vehicles for a good price. Definitely the right guy if you need help.

having just bought a used vehicle from a dealership ---take a reliable mechanic with you preferably with a diagnostic computer . Don't believe anything the salesman tells you.

I don’t think you can get a Prado for 4K nowadays JD.
Whoops. Got my numbers mixed up. That one is 7K.

But, those are all ads from FB marketplace.

99% of the cars for sale there are no deals, but these are just examples of what you can get for a lot less than $20K.

And there is a lot of sub $10k vehicles I would go take a look at for sure.

I have residences in both of the states you mentioned and a lifetime of experience. NO, comparison can be made between driving there and the DR. None!. I live full time now in the southern tier of the DR and there is NOTHING relaxing about driving here and maintaining 100%concentration while cars traveling 75-80 mph past you on the right, motors coming at you in the wrong direction, signs that are in a different language, clunkers on the road challenging your new car, passengers in your car that mean well but want give bachata lessons while yer driving.

My advise to a fellow Georgian is: Buy a car using ALL of the pointers that are archived here on DR1. Then immediately, having done the research ahead of time hire a chauffeur. Use him for a year and go from there. Since your girlfriend won't be able to help you, learn fast about chaufer insurance, registration, laws, traffic stops and what to pay and not pay and all there is to learn about owning and driving a car in the DR.
