Where do DR town names come from?

Had no idea about the origin of calling places Sabana something . Very interesting and a nice bit of trivia since everyone I've ever asked could never tell me why exactly a place would be called Lost Blanket.

Nop, the meaning in this case is / Lost Valley
Lost = Perdido
Sabana = Small valley
Valle = Valley

I used to live in Mata Hambre...

In Cotui area we seem to have many describing trees, vegetation, animals, etc. La Mata (There used to be a big old tree there), Los tocones, La bija (paprika tree), La piedra, los higueros, etc.

I do know the origin of at three (newer) towns around there. One is called Canta La Rana because the area used to be rice farms which of course had tons of frogs thus "where the frog sings". Another one is Inespre due to the fact that there used to be an Inespre silo there...and my favorite one of all "El Pescozon" - The slap / The smack. The government built a bunch of houses for people who had lost theirs during hurricane David (1979). Of course some of these went to government cronies instead of the people who really needed them. One guy got so furious that he was left out that during the ceremony to give people their keys to the new houses he smacked the cr@p out of the government official who was giving them away. Thus from that point forward this is known as "El Pescozon".

El Pescozon is in the right side of the road but in the left side of the road the name is "La Aviacion"; A small airport the farmer uses to spray pesticide to rice plantations.

When I was a young boy in the DR and visited my mom in Villa Juana when she was attending the UASD (back in the early 80s) there was a barrio next to Villa Juana called Los Quemaos. I always heard it was because the barrio had burnt to the ground at some point in time and they rebuilt it. I wonder if that town is still there. There was another barrio in the Capital which had a peculiar name I have never been able to forget. The barrio is/was called Mandinga. I often wonder if it's still there. I spent a summer there and have fond memories. Back then this area was underdeveloped and had dirt roads.

Now moving to Santiago...HB and those in Santiago haven't mentioned the names of the following barrios because they are probably way too vulgar and you don't dare...but I will do it...There are two barrios in Santiago who's names you won't believe 1. El Alto Del Toto (the height of the vagina) and 2. El Resbalon Del Guebo (the peni's slip). I have no idea how they got their names. All I know is they are around Cienfuegos. I wish I had a picture of the Brugal sign with the names because I know some of you won't believe it.

You won't ever see the Brugal sign with those names, as Hillbilly said there in a neighborhood called Cien Fuegos the population in this place is about 250,000. people. but the whole area was subdivided for the neighbors and this is the reason of so many vulgar names.

El Cemillero, El fondo de la botella, La Mosca, El Resbalon del guebo, El alto del Toto, El Hoyo de La Cacata, La pina, Pochun, Los Multi familiares de cien fuegos, Ciudad satelite, Etc.
