Mail used to work in SD. Back in the 70s and 80s I sent birthday and Christmas cards to my in-laws with cash inside and they arrived!!! Delivered to their door.

Where Does International Mail Go? (Not FedEx, Carib, BMCargo, etc.)
These days in the rubbish tin after a search for anything valuable. It is before Covid when I last received any international mail.
