Where is Las Carmelitas neighborhood?
Could there be a convent or the scene of a former convent nearby?

Are you sure? For example this house (http://www.epkasa.com/m/es/detalle/casa-en-venta-en-santiago-las-carmelitas/d477.html) is for sale in 'el sector las Carmelitas' and that's just there where the google maps link I gave you points to.

We did find the neighborhood. I've been down the street at the Ferreteria many times and never saw it.
