Why do the Dominican people have one of the highest amount of single -mother families

I haven't read all 19 pages so can someone tell me the exact statistic. I figure it is also some low number that when taken out of context makes it seem as if most every young teenage Dominican girl is pregnant or about to be.

I also figure that when taken into context as a percentage of the total young teenage Dominican girl population the actual percent figures are also extremely low. Could be wrong but doubt that. These numbers seem to me to be more sensationalistic than realistic.

Well in the twenty years that my wife has had the school not one teenage girls going to the school has become pregnant while attending the school. Two that quit school became pregnant , one several months later and the other approximately a year later. Her I know because she's a relative. Now she is in Spain attending school.

In answer to the OP's question the real reason is abortion isn't allowed nor much less funded by Obama, although he is doing his best to make that happen.

#2 would be that children aren't given condoms in grade school here either.

The real issue is teen promiscuity, and the DR is no worse and more than likely even better that US teenagers.

Chip, if you stay in your bubble its very possible to believe that things are the same if not better than the states. I am impressed by the caliber of teenage students at my son's school and do not expect any of them to be pregnant before the end of high school. They study hard, have good manners, have parents that are involved etc

The reality though is that when you step out of our bubble of functional families and middle class comfort things change drastically. You dont associate with the underclass like so many do on this board but the reality of "ghetto" life here is far different that what you would see as part of your day to day life and far worse than anything other than the worst of the worst in the States.

I know you have your agenda, and its an agenda that actually seems logical from your private school bubble in Santiago but it is not the reality of life here.

Maybe as a whole but there are areas of the USA that have as high a teen pregnancy rate, and when you take the stats and separate them by ethnicity the rates of American Hispanic teens is pretty close to the DR as is the African American rate, and this is with untold numbers of abortions, better access to birth control, and more education on methods.

The rates vary much depending on the source and age groups selected.
From the link you quoted:

[BTW, the article somehow insinuates that the frequent pregnancies (in Saman?) have to do with tourism, which I find farfetched.

Well it is, it is only religious freaks and conformers who consider you must stand before a third party and sign a contract before you are morally stable enough to breed. If this was the case then mankind would never have existed.

well put. i have no idea where people get this idea that if a woman chooses to stay single, then has a kid,she is going to hell in a handbasket, and the kid has no hope. the kid has no hope because of other dynamics.

TV and the WEB have not caused the DR to go downhill. the DR was no better before the internet became a commonplace.

there are several reasons why the DR is a bust, but you have not touched on any of them.

i lost my patience last Thursday trying to explain the concept of an appointment window to a supervisor at Claro. my internet went down, and she told me a guy would be coming to my home on Friday. i asked her for a time window, such as between 9 and 11, or 1 and 5. i told her that it is ridiculous to expect someone to stay home all day waiting for a tech to come. that would mean taking a day off from work every time a person was coming to fix something.

i gave up. she could not understand the idea. to think she must be some sort of high school or college graduate.
