Now if I throw a party and place a bottle of "Gold" and a bottle of "Black", which would go first? What about Dewars vs. Johnny?

I believe the JW would be gone before the Dewars. I have always known that Gold is more expensive than Black but I do not know if Gold would be chosen over Black by Dominicans at a party.

If they were made aware that it was a more expensive JW, I'm sure they would all jump on it, as would I.
Why drink seconds when you can have the best?

Exactly. If they know that Gold is more expensive and they are both on the table then I am sure that they will drink it before the Black.

Dewars white is better than JB Red.
Dewars 12 is better than JB Black.
Dewars 18 is better than JB Gold, or even Blue(way overrated IMO).
Green is a different animal.

aaahhhh yes i forgot about MAKERS MARK, the ONLY whisky i can truly enjoy on the rocks and on occasion with a cherry on top! LOL good stuff!

You should try ZACAPA CENTENARIO 23yrd, AMAZING smooth stuff!!!

Sorry Rocky,

yes, JW is nasty and it gives me a massive hangover. Yet I have a girlfriend that can drink the entire bottle and be up at 6am ready to go. I DONT GET IT?

I just read through this entire thread and now for my contribution:

I grew up watching my uncles/aunts drink a whisky called Dunbar which is no longer around in the DR. This was really cheap stuff. They then moved to Dewars and then JWB. So in a way it was passed down to me and when I was in my late teens early 20s I was a fan of JWB. My late teens and early 20s are what I consider my "CHOPO" years when I used to go to Las Vegas, Champion Palace and Ambis frequently. Back then if you drank JWB you had "dinero" and if you saw Brugal on someone's table you immediately assumed they were of "lower class". I no longer drink JWB because it gives me a really bad head ache/hangover the next day. Only thing I can drink without getting a horrible head ache is presidente or vodka (stoli, grey goose, ciroc).

I agree with what others have said as well...it's a "status" thing to some and a "taste" thing to others. I have a friend who can drink the blue any time he wants but for some reason he prefers black. Why? It's beyond me considering blue is supposed to be their premier brand.

I would say they drink it for "Status" go to a Dominican Club in NY/NJ and there is nothing but bottles of JW Black and Remy. I personally don't drink any of that stuff. I think it's nasty. I'll stick with vodka martinis.

El Tigre, Dunbar is still sold in DR.

In reference to the original question; drinking wiskey (Chivas, Dewars, JWB) was/is always viewed as a status symbol. This goes back to the days before everyone on the island knew someone or had a relative in Nueva Yol, so it's not a Dom-York thing. ;)

I recall on my last trip to DR [last year Aug 2007] in the parking lot of some liquoreria in the capital, some young guys and gals were sitting having a good time and drinking a bottle of Southern Comfort! now THATS a first! :)

Last Wed in SD airport Im standing in a very crowded line with my 2 year old dughter, a Dom York tiguere puts a Duty Free bag down on the floor about a foot behing us with two very large unprotected bottles of JWB in them. My little girl took one step back accidently knocking the bag over and one bottle breaks.. glass and JWB all over the floor. The guy went instantly apopletic spitting mad on me, waving a soaked receipt up in my face repeating "you owe me fitty-fi dollar lady!" over and over. He kicks the broken bottle onto my daughters feet and his mortified mother makes the other family member drag him off to other side of baggage claim until we cleared the line. This wasn't a taste-tasting type of guy... IMO it's a just a bandwagon status thing for most young Dominicans where I live... but mess with their status symbols and you risk bodily harm.
