I just read through this entire thread and now for my contribution:
I grew up watching my uncles/aunts drink a whisky called Dunbar which is no longer around in the DR. This was really cheap stuff. They then moved to Dewars and then JWB. So in a way it was passed down to me and when I was in my late teens early 20s I was a fan of JWB. My late teens and early 20s are what I consider my "CHOPO" years when I used to go to Las Vegas, Champion Palace and Ambis frequently. Back then if you drank JWB you had "dinero" and if you saw Brugal on someone's table you immediately assumed they were of "lower class". I no longer drink JWB because it gives me a really bad head ache/hangover the next day. Only thing I can drink without getting a horrible head ache is presidente or vodka (stoli, grey goose, ciroc).
I agree with what others have said as well...it's a "status" thing to some and a "taste" thing to others. I have a friend who can drink the blue any time he wants but for some reason he prefers black. Why? It's beyond me considering blue is supposed to be their premier brand.
