We all have the right to give our children whatever name we wish to.

I don't think it apropriate for ANYONE to disparage anyone's name.

Those that do, evidently think they KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR EVERYONE!

The Good Lord deliver us from people of that philosophy.

To disparage a person's name is to render the ultimate insult, and that is unforgivable in any society.

Just my "shut your mouth" worth.

Ahh man I wanted to say that !!

Dominicans give their kids foreign and made up names b/c they are black. Just like u will find American blacks with names like Latecia (which is french, but considered ghetto if u are black), u will find Dominicans (who are clearly black, but often in denial) with names like Johnson, Kelvin, and Jairon. Just ask Michael Jackson, no matter how hard u try u can't run from ur blackness.

Okay, that up there was a joke and not true. Don't hate me. I know how sensitive this forum is about race.

To answer the question: They are just names.

I do think keeping your culture in your name is important
I also happen to think that most of the names Dominicans give their children are beautiful .... and as many people have said before, a name is just a name and doesnt make a difference whether it is representative of ur culture or not ....
I think names like Roberto, Juan, Miguel are alot nicer sounding than Robert, John or Michael (I find them boring and repetitive.... how many Johns or Michaels do you kno in Canada???? ALOT!!!!) and yet the latter of the names are "my culture"

To me a person can name their kid anything they want, whether it matched with their last name and culture or not.....
A name is not what makes a person, its just one of the things we ared given and have to live with .....
Well thats just my opinion......

I don't think it has to do with their skin color but their social class. It seems that uneducated people are more likely to give weird names to their kids. In white trash country you hear the name "Bo" and "bubba" a lot. What do you think of names like Summer (isn't this a season) how about Clay (the dirt dough), Dawn (early morning). I know of a weather man (white) who named his son Storm, they work in channel 2 in NY long time ago. I have known guys named Carrie and Kellie (mostly a female name). Girls named Tonie (sounds like the guy name Tony) and so on. Don't think that only minorities name their kid weird names.

I know. You are probably right. I made that post after reading the thread about Blas Jimenez.

every name in the history of names was made up by somebody...I am sure that Jane, peter, Jonathan, Mackenzie, and Madison all sounded weird or stupid to someone at some point. the only thing I think is "weird or stupid" is when people name their kids after things such as liquor like Alize :nervous:

The rich and famous have gone crazy that way for a while. Gwyneth Paltrow/Chris Martin's daughter's name Apple is my favourite!! Frank Zappa's : Moon Unit, Dweezil, Diva and Ahmet Rodan, not bad huh?

Myself I think a name should be quite important, it's a lifelong relationship and it somehow expresses your (your parents'?) personality if only on first impression. You should give it some thought before you name your child something off the wall. Some (Dominican) creativity and uniqueness however won't do any harm.... I chose my kids' names carefully and think they're the coolest (the names and the kids of course).

I'm personally blessed with an extremely international name, I can go from Latin America to Russia, no change of spelling needed even Asians dig it hahahaa

Someone else may have already mentioned this, but I didn't read all of the posts. A few months ago I read that there were three babies here in the States named ESPN (pronounced Espin). And yes, the names are in all caps.

I just finished a great book called "Freakonomics", written by a rogue economist who looks at weird data and comes to some pretty cool conclusions. I recommmend it.

The last part is all about names. He mentions a lot but the guys who named his two sons "winner" and "loser" were among the best.

But the prize goes to the parents who named their son <pronounced> "Shateed"......but spelled "S H I T H E A D".

I heard on a radio talk show in Pennsylvania where an african american couple named their child Kunta Kinte after the main character of roots. The funny part is that the last name was King, therefore his initials would be K.K.K.

i think these parents just don't give a dam about their kids and have obviously not given any thought to their child actually being in the adult working world. they have destined them for disaster who is going to go to college with names like that

I totally agree. Unfortunately, many African Americans do this to their kids...as if life is not hard enough. Now you go and name your kid something stupid.

My brother had a Puerto Rican student in Ohio named "moh-vey vee-day-oh"....spelled Movie Video.

Well Dick is the official nick name for Richard, i.e. Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon, the name was used way before it turned into an identifier of male genitalia. It's not his parents fault.

Many African Americas are becoming more interested in their African roots and a desire to reject or replace white culture has led to many names from Africa being used. Black families in other countries, including Britain, are also following these trends. Just because people don't understand certain names doesn't necessarily mean that the name is stupid, of course their are many parents, that just make names up, but its their prerogative.
