Jose, Julio and Nadia are proper names for Dominicans. I'm sorry but the others are just plain ridiculous. Your family ( I think) have Spanish/African lineage, not English/African lineage, so why all these Anglicisms? I don't care about the " times". It can be the year 3000, if Dominicans still speak Spanish and eat platanos, we should maintain our Spanish names. You don't say you are " indio" when you're clearly a Mulatto and you don't say you're "Michael" when there is a perfectly Spanish language equivalent to it that is " Miguel"!

I didn't name myself, ofcourse, but I was given a ridiculous arse name, and I did change it to a normal Spanish name when I became of age. Do you know that in Peru they have a law that prevent parents from giving their children stupid arse names?
I saw that in the news one time. They've found that on the phone books names like :

Marciana De la Cruz
Hitler Mego

There was one scientist that named one of his daughters " RH-O negativo". This is true !

Do you think that a child deserves to grow up with the humilliations from stupid arse names like these?? I think that in Peru parents can only choose from an Official list approved by the government. It is part of the " child protection laws" in the country. There are many ignorant parents without any education or culture, they just don't know any better.

In Japan too, I haven't met a single Japanese with a non-Yamato name. All you see everywhere are names like :

Ichiro Honda
Michiko Suzuki
Nobunaga Nakamura
Ryutaro Hashimoto

Parents have to choose from an official list of Chinese characters to give a name to their babies. There was a time when a crazy, stupid guy overthere wanted to name his son " Akuma" , which in Japanese means " devil". Ofcourse, it was immediately tossed out by the government.

I haven't seen extremes like these in DR(yet). Anglicisms aren't something " humiliating" , but they do show a lack of culture.

well, I have heard ( not sure how acurate it is) that in cuba there is a similar law and in venezuela as well, that you can only name your children the names on an approved list.

In a way I see you point because I have seen many ridiculous names out there, I met a group of girls who were all named after countries and/or cities, like: Tailandia, Hannoi. Are you serious??? dont get me wrong I believe you should be able to name you child whatever you want as long as it is within reason, if it were up to the ignorance of some people in my family they would've named me Stephany with a middle name of Powers, just because when I was born the actress Stephany Powers was very popular ( I'm glad my parents decided not to listen to those people and gave me a good name like Ana (lol) yes its common, but it is simple 3 letters and no matter how you spell it frontwards or backwards it still reads the same). Not only dominicans are guilty of this, many other latinos do this (specially Puerto Ricans) if I have to hear the name Wilmarys, Nilmarys or Wiledys one more time I swear! seriously people lets be conscious when we are choosing names for our children, since they have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

I have a friend whose name is Jesus Maria (last name here). I'll leave out his last name for him.

I asked one of my dominican friends here how did he get a middle name of "maria". She explained that older and traditional dominicans use some book to choose the middle name and it makes no difference in regards to gender.

For a guy to have his middle name be Maria is not that weird or ridiculous.

There are some famous intellectuals that had Maria as their middle name. The one that comes to mind is the great intellectual of the late 1800s Spanish-speaking Caribbean Eugenio Mar?a de Hostos. He lived his last years in Santo Domingo and died there. In fact, the old Ramfis Trujillo Park on the malec?n near the obelisk was renamed Eugenio Mar?a de Hostos in his honor.

I think the thread title should be changed to unusual- It makes things more interesting to have an unusual name \(mine must be one of the most boring in the uk , but Dominicans seem to find it interesting)

The only thing I find curious is the fact that first born girls are sometimes given their father's names. I know a Johnny, a Danny and a Emil. I have met many others with their father's names too. One other thing that happens in the DR is all the girls in a family are given the same first name, especially when the name is Santa (Saint). My wife's first name is Santa and both of her sisters are Santa too. That's another thing! Almost every woman I know here goes by a nickname.

I love reading the social pages just for namespotting. But as well as giving children peculiar names (something that not only Dominicans are guilty of) what are parents thinking of when the give siblings the same name?! I recently met twin girls whose names were identical but spelled differently. Can't remember the exact name but it was something like Glenny and Gleny. Also seen sisters whose names are the same except for the endings (-leisy and -leidy). Those famous sextuplets born a couple of years ago were also given very similar names. Parents - sorry but you are completely bonkers.

David Bowie- called his kid Zowie
Frank Zappa- Dweezil and Moonunit
Prince- changed his own name to an abstract picture of a dog licking it's freckle.
Bob Geldof- Heavenly hirani Tigerlilly, etc etc

remember any others?
