A maintenance operation failure that caused a water hammer situation and forced Punta Catalina I power plant and its 352MW to not return to the national grid after a regular maintenance check, resulted in major blackouts nationwide. The Punta Catalina power plant failure coincided with the removal from the grid of a similarly large coal-fired Itabo power plant that had been scheduled for regular maintenance.

Jaime Aristy Escuder, former director of the Punta Catalina power plant, attributed the failure of the Punta Catalina I power plant to the inexperience of the new power plant operators. He explained that in September 2020, with the change of government, key persons of the technical staff of Punta Catalina were replaced by new engineers. The staff that was fired had been trained by the General Electric and Technimont builders of the power...

I agree with llapalia21 but until the rest of the country does something, they will continue to operate as before. We've been out now in Boca Chica since 930 this morning. I'm hoping for under 5 hours of no luz today.

I give those of you a lot of credit for being able to live here full time.
I managed to last six years and even that required frequent trips out of here for brief returns to normalcy.
Even my Dom wife who is a naturalized American said the other day she could not live here full time. Shocked me.
Having to constantly fight for the basic necessities of life wore me out.

We got 4.5 hours of black out. The maintenance sheet said 920 AM - 120PM. We were down from 930AM to 2PM. Now I can take a shower!

Yepp, do exactly that. I have never had an issue with EdeNorte where I live, but I'm still suspicious (or just a control freak  ) so I routinely go out and check my "contador" to verify what I've been using. I also do just what "ese tipo" is recommending, just to unplug everything to verify that it's not registering some other electricity running. I mean it's not unheard of for neighbors to connect to each other's powerlines. So it could well be that a neighbor is using your electricity.
And always check the bill, does it coincide with what the contador is saying?
And during the initial months of the pandemic at least here, there was at least 1 time, when they didn't send one month's bill and just joined it together with the next month's bill, which made it seem like you've been charged the double. For example, from having a monthly bill of around 1000 pesos, it then went up to more than 2000 pesos, so I remember there was a lot of outcry about that, just because they skip one month and then charged you for 2 months.

It's just good practice really.Like I had mentioned there is monitoring equipment available that is quite accurate ,so much so that some utility co's allow for it's use for billing..You could go with something as cheap as a kill a watt (plug in usage monitor )or a whole house wi-fi connected system.
Look up smart home ( emporia energy ).Time's are tough gotta watch every peso ( sorry forum rules )watch every penny!

I agree. I have many foreign friends from Canada and the U.S., and Europe who have hit their limit with the crime, traffic issues, and robbery from the government and have either already sold or put their houses up for sale and have decided to move elsewhere. My husband is Dominican and can't wait for us to tie up loose ends here and return back to the U.S. All of his family have sold their property and also moved to the United States. It says a lot when even natives want to leave despite the issues the U.S. currently faces.

Reminder - this is an English language forum.
Sorry, I probably should have posted in both languages. I was hoping my comment would be sent to EdeSur and not be ignored like all other messages because they claim to not be able to translate to English.

Thank you. It is actually happening to so many people here in the country. My area has been hit especially hard with the increases. My neighbor went from 5700 pesos monthly to almost 17,000 and 2 of her kids even left the house and got their own apartment. What happened here is criminal.

Yes, the same thing happened to me back when the pandemic first happened but after that, my bill has been more than doubled monthly. They did it to every single one of my neighbors. My neighbor even purchased one of those monitors from Amazon and tracks his electricity and unplugs everything. He went with all of the information to EdeSur after 3 months of monitoring and they opened a claim. They supposedly sent a tech to the house to check the meter and everything is functioning properly so they refuse to adjust the bill. They say it is his actual usage and he must pay the bill or be disconnected. It is absurd. The utilities are government-owned so I guess, what should we expect? I also have to pay for water to CASAAD yes they never send water to our home.

You need to learn, adapt and do.

Our Electric was in line for our first few years. 10k per month. Then it started slowly going up and hit 20k. A Smart Meter had been installed.
I became Elmer Fudd; I'm huntin for wabbits." I hunted for amps.
I started cutting back on our use everywhere I could find.
We hit over 24k.
I then worked on cutting them off and it has worked great.

I never saw, and still don't see, such dramatic increases as others have mentioned. My power usage actually went down when more power was available because there was less energy wasted in charging and discharging batteries.
