Why the high electricity bills?

I live in Luperon , 5 bedroom house , one A/c refrigerator fans and lights .... Edenorte .... Minimum $10,000 DOP a month.
Yes several times a mysterious overcharge and non payment of last months bills........
Meter on post down the road,, suspect I am not only one on meter.... Edenorte refuses to install meter on my Property or house.
My friend pays an average of 1500 pesos for the same situation.... meter on house.

Once I argued the matter and my electricity was shut off.

I live not to far away. Edenorte as well.
Combo fridge/freezer, chest freezer, no A/C but water pump and pool pump, LED (?) bulbs, outside lights are solar + all the usual appliances like internet router, fans, etc......
Anywhere between 1300- 2000 pesos a month ( depending of we have the water heater on ).

I used to be in the same case as you : meter along the road on a pole with a bunch of others.
When they upgraded the meters/poles/wires, I prepared a " new" circuit from my " whole house emergency switch off " to my wall that gives on the road.
They were reluctant to put the meter there, but when the workmen turned up, they were more than happy to put it there----- it is on my wall, on the outside, facing the road, so no problems for them to read the meter.
On the end nearly every single house is the same...... no more " bunched " up meters.

Yes Alex, they are really bad at being crooks, selling energy for less than its production cost. Stupid eh?

On a more serious note, I looked into solar panels but a quick calculation has delayed that investment because the ROI is not there yet. At least not for me, with less than 2k dop monthly bill usually, after installing more energy efficient appliances and LED lights/floodlights. I like a lot of light in my house and garden, now at 1/10th the cost.

My ROI looks like 7 years, and then you must expect replace batteries etc. which will push that ROI further out.
Assuming installations cost at about 350k dop, as stated in the thread you referred to

But the cost of solar panels drops every year, so I hope when my inverter batteries goes bad, the ROI will be there.

I bought a house with both inverter and generator, if Edenorte stops with their 8 hour maintenance windows in the future, I would not need the inverter either.Pretty much 24/7 power apart from those.
Generator makes to much noise, only in emergency

Would be interested in someone elses ROI calculations on solar panels. I am sure someday I will install some myself.

Never happened at my house. Maybe previous owner installed a surge protection circuit, or the power lines is not that bad here in Cab where I live.
Probably the last because I rented two years in an apartment with no protector, and nothing bad happened there either.
Not any complaints from other dominican families I know either, is this a big problem today, or a problem of the past?

But at least lightning could strike, surge protectors are an inexpensive way to protect your gear against random power spike damage. Could happen running on solar too, lightning strikes following cables.

What is the purpose of this sheet. To calculate with reasonable accuracy it's your kw hour times the rate. What's also missing here is complete rates. In condos i.e. they bill at 18pesos. Also if your consumption increase is significant you are billed at the highest rate for your catagory, such as the 11 pesos on your bills.

Even easier than that...

If you feel someone is absconding with electricity that you are paying for, during daylight go to your circuit breaker box(es) in your house and turn off all breakers. Go to your meter. If The meter is showing no current draw, you're fine. Turn everything back on.

If your meter shows a draw when all of your circuits are disconnected, pick a convenient time after sundown and turn off the breaker at your meter. Probably in short order you'll see someone ambling down the road to see why they have no luz and everyone else does. There is your culprit.

It's not unheard of for some "electricians" installing outdoor/street lighting to tie into any meter they find convenient. If the first two actions don't address your concern, your Ede will come out if asked and verify that nothing is connected behind your meter.

Thanks Santiago. When you build Excel spread sheets for a slide presentation, there is no use. At least start with sum, then build your skills from there. There are hundreds of power consumer calculators out there for those who peaky and no peaky alike!

Btw what is custom for Ede? In terms of power consumption papi? Kilowatts, unit price? That sheet cannot estimate your bill more, because they break you down on 110 vs 220 vs total consumption this month and last. Increase in consumption, or whatever delta consumption. I'm sure you meant well but your ego and 500 posts get in the way.

Thanks for the info, I'm doing that as soon as they let me back. Not sure how much confidence I have in EDE verifying anything. Can you access the breaker by your meter? Our meters all boxed in together - Villa Liberacion. I've lived in the same spot for three years. No change in usage etc. Always had a bill of between 1500-2000. May is 4500. No se.
