I feel like such a dork, but I am considering traveling to the DR alone for my birthday in May. I have been before to Punta Cana but not alone. I had a good time. I stayed in Bavaro off a resort and mingled with the locals, went to bars, took the gua-gua and enjoyed. I speak Spanish and understand some of the Dominican verbage. I have a couple ?friends? that we met while there who were cool with us. However, they are mostly men (some married but never met the wives) and I am a women traveling alone this time (last I traveled with a man). Although my travel partner didn?t speak Spanish just being their helped I think (Like buying a car). I am not scared, I just wonder if it will be safe and fun alone? I am smart and will probably stay on a mid size resort this time (although I like being with the locals way better). Like I want to go to Coco Bongo and Imagen and the local bars and dance. Maybe take an excursion to Santo Domingo but that?s it. I?ve been to Saona so I don?t want to do those tings. What do you all think? Has anyone done this before? Is there a place Americans and Europeans usually hang out? What are on the Island is best for those traveling alone?

If you are young you would really enjoy Cabarete. No problem making friends there with people from all over plus the locals. Everybody gets along.

Friend of mine travels to Punta Cana frequently alone...R&R she calls it. She is 41 and she has never had a problem. Of course she is also mindful/careful of her surroundings. She has also traveled to Santo Domingo alone and was fine.

Come on people... If she's planning to stay at a resort and do "organised tours", I don't see any danger....

J?sus, Marie Joseph, I've been living here, alone, for the past 4 years.... Gimme a break....

Be self-assured and don't take any BS from anyone... Rule No. 1; Trust No One and you'll be great !! Have a nice vacation.

I have met several women travelling alone here in the DR, from a young girl maybe 19 riding her bicycle from Santo Domingo to the North Coast and heading back to SD to fly home after a month here.
We had a female self proclaimed lesbian motorcyclist who blogged her trip here on DR1 a year or so ago.
I also have met a lady who was here with her 4 year old son, but still alone without another adult. Come on down. It is great!
I also know Charlise who posted above. She lived in an apartment near mine alone for about a year. She weighs less than 100 lbs.

There's a cool little eco hotel run by an english couple on the outskirts of las terrenas,
stayed there for a while it would be ideal for a young single traveller. The area is safe and the hosts
are very helpful, the place is called Jurassic park hotel in las terrenas.

Cabarete
don't worry, he will pay for your drink and slip you a micky and you won't remember a thing when you wake up in the morning, that is, if you wake up.

Pretty stupid to say it WILL happen. That's like saying she WILL be hit my a speeding moto-concho and crippled for life. It COULD happen but if she is sensible it is highly unlikely.

When I first came to the DR in 2007 I was completely alone (man) and took trips every weekend to different parts of the island from Santo Domingo where I have always lived. I drove myself with my own car and many times returned to SD very late at night with no problems at all. If you use good common sense and don't believe a word a Dominican Man tells you, you will be fine. The men here are very aggressive and will do and say anything to hook up with you. Just be aware of that and you will be fine. Good luck and have a great time here. It's a great country that I absolutely love, crazy but I like that.
