British English speakers would just say blanket but it may be a regionalism. Plaid is a kind of fabric or the tartan sash in traditional Scottish Highland costume. US English speakers say plaid to describe the pattern or type of weave but GB English speakers call it tartan.
Tartan is the cloth where the plaid is made of. Not the “blanket” itself.
A plaid is the “ blanket” used for picnics and when travelling by train, or on a chilly night in front of the fire.

The sash or wrap worn over the shoulder is called a plaid.

Since the news on TV and in newspapers are dominated by news about the pandemic I started to notice how many words are used for the same item. Depending on what newspapers I read it’s a different word. I know Spanish vocabulary is vast but it is incredible because the word is just standard vocabulary in most cases and not necessarily a regionalism or slang.

The word that prompted me to start this thread is Mask. In many cities people are required to wear a mask until further notice. In newspapers I have seen:

máscara
mascarilla
tapaboca
nasobuco - this word is regional used in Cuba
cubreboca

.............................

-MP.

I just finished reading an article in Hoy Digital on the state of COVID-19 in Cuba and I came across this word:

barbijo- face mask

I knew what it meant from the context but I have never heard this word at all.

It is true. You learn something new everyday 🤦‍♀️
