Right at the southern entrance to Santiago de los Caballeros is the abandoned construction of a very large hotel, shaped like a pyramid, by the side of the Duarte Highway. Over 15 years have passed since a dispute over inheritance by the children of magnate Huascar Rodriguez (Cementos Cibao) shut down construction. The media reports that just this past week work has begun anew to complete this major venue, and provide a much needed boost to local and international tourism in Santiago, the country’s second largest city. The venue is located next to the HOMS hospital complex.

Currently, technicians are surveying the entire structure of the 400-room would-be hotel to assess what is needed to go forward.

If completed, the Gran Hotel Cibao would be the largest hotel in Santiago.

Finally! IIRC, it was something like 90% complete when he died. They should be able to get it up and running fairly quickly.

Abinader had indicated it would be one of his priorities to get it done back when he was elected.
