Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

Filet mignon is not from a pig. Is one of the finest part of filet pur and never cheap.

Filet mignon comes from the French language and refers to the fillet of pork----even though it could be used for the fillet of any animal---- however the beef equivalent in culinary terms is the tournedos.

Lifestyle and location are the two largest factors in daily costs. We semi-eat Dominican, we don't eat rice or bread, but we do eat plantains,yuca...etc. My wife loves chicken feet, mondongo...etc, me I don't eat any of that.
i never eat that either. recently they have been cooking more of that.we eat lots of rice. i have been trying to baking bread.

Speaking of bread. I gave up on the crusted bread sold here a long time ago. But a new brand came out and it passed the original "squeeze test" so I bought it. First one that had none of the crust and felt like bread. Not the best, but better than what I bought before. It is a mini bread, very thin and small. Brand is Mini Mi Blanco, in a blue package. I got it at Jumbo. For 99 pesos try it.............

Good you don't and probably why you are still alive. Nothing screams clogged arteries and impacted colon like mondongo

Have you considered Boca Chica and surrounding areas? I knew a guy paying 500/month for a place on the beach. A few years ago, but might be worth a look.

I'm paying 32k pesos a month now for a 3 bedroom 1 bath downstairs condo. We just moved here a month ago from another BC place with the same landlady. My place is very spacious. We use the 3rd bedroom for storage. It's an easy walk to the beach, probably about 400 meters.

However, BC does have it's drawbacks. There is trash everywhere. I've been to PC, PP, and Santiago and none of them compare to the trashiness of BC. It's very bad.

Noise is not generally a problem here, as it appears everyone knows that 10pm is the "turn that shit off" hour. That works really well for me. Also if you are a guy you will be accosted by the putas here until they know you're not interested.

I don't know rents on more Dominican style homes but I would think you can get something for between 10 - 15k pesos a month.

Mondongo is Tripe, which certainly will not cause impacted colon or arteries. I just don't like the consistency. I don't eat any organ meats either, for the same reason. My Canadian farm girl mother loves all that stuff, especially liver and tongue.

Filet mignon has nothing to do with pork.
Tournedos is not filet mignon. They are different parts of the cow.
Filet mignon can refer to both beef and pork, depending on the context. Let me explain:

  1. Beef Filet Mignon:
  2. Pork Filet Mignon:
Both versions can be prepared similarly, often wrapped in bacon and seared quickly in the oven or on the grill. So, whether you’re enjoying the beef or pork variety, filet mignon remains a delicacy!

I have to admit you are right. I never knew that to be honest.
When you order a filet mignon here in Europa 99% think of the part of the filet pur.
Sorry.

In the US, if you order a filet mignon in a restaurant, it is always beef - never pork. Same in restaurants I've been to in Mexico and some other Central American and South American countries. Even restaurants here in the DR where filet mignon was on the menu, it was beef. It comes from part of the tenderloin.

That's why I added that it depended on where the poster came from.
He is right saying that pork filet mignon ( with 1 L ) is cheap in the DR. Around 175 pesos per lb at LaSirena if I remember correctly.
Beef fillet is more expensive at around 450/500 pesos per lb---- which is dirt cheap in my books as back home a butcher will sell fillet north of 50€ per kilo.

I indulge in both in the DR------ far too often, sadly 😀😀.

The butcher kills 2 cows in the village every Saturday. On each animal there is a filet of 6 to 10 pounds. I buy a filet at US$3 a pound. I put it all through an electric chopper at home. Then I make portions of hamburger that I place in the freezer

The good thing is that all those folks you just mentioned above they gather at the colmado or Karaoke in the evening after they get home from work.

I miss that life!

JJ
Absolutely, last time I was in Salcedo we did just that! Met up with a few friends after they got out of work, had a few beers, laughed and had heated conversations about politics, baseball and women!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Back to the topic…

I honestly believe that it’s all about your lifestyle… I know people that aren’t happy with 4K,5k,6k Dollars a month here. They always need more or always have a reason why they believe they need and want more more more.

Then there’s normal folks (whatever that is ) that don’t try to live above their means, where life isn’t a competition of who has the most crap. Working class families or middle class that find a rhythm and work within it.

Keep it simple, don’t over spend or try to live like you’re on a permanent vacation and you should be fine.

Better not to finance a car… Buy one in decent shape, a used Toyota, Nissan or Honda, those are everywhere and the parts are super easy to find and repairs are cheap.

Find a group of decent friends that WORK, no losers that just wanna suck up your funds every time you go out…

Learn how to say NO more than YES.

Find the local restaurant in your area that you like, find a nice beach you enjoy or ove of the many rivers all over the country, on other words, find what makes you happy and enjoy the simple things and believe me, you’ll be just fine.

My 2 cents…

I early retired last year in February, my work history of 15 years in the US hardly help me to make that number, I will have to stick here a Couples more years working part time and waiting for my wife to reach retirement age.
But I will be just fine in DR with that money since I wouldn't have to pay mortgage over there.

My fear is that the DR in 20-25 years will have " caught " up with NA/Europe in terms of cost of life.
I say 20-25 years because that is when we will be paid our retirement pensions.

Hence why we have been spending 6 months a year in the DR for the past 10+ years. Hedging our bets 😂.
